Overview: who it's for

The YETI Rambler 10 oz Wine Tumbler is a stemless, double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel cup with a ceramic lining inside and a magnetic slider lid on top. It's shaped like a short, slim tumbler rather than a mug. YETI sells it for wine, and its shape suits a cocktail, a small pour of whisky, or a juice glass at breakfast just as well.

It solves two problems that glass has in a van. Glass breaks, and a stemmed glass tips over on any surface that isn't perfectly flat. A stainless tumbler doesn't shatter when it rolls off a camp table, and a low, flat-bottomed cup is harder to knock over than a stem.

What the Amazon link sells: the YETI Rambler 10 oz Wine Ceramic Lined Tumbler in Navy, YETI part number 21071507399. YETI's own product name is the "10 oz Wine Tumbler w/ DuraSip Ceramic Lining," and YETI's page lists it with the MagSlider lid. YETI also sells an older version without the ceramic lining under different listings. This review covers the ceramic-lined one.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from YETI's product page and FAQ for the ceramic-lined 10 oz Wine Tumbler and from the Amazon listing we link to.

Choose this if:

  • You want a wine or cocktail cup for camp that won't shatter and is hard to tip over.
  • You want something that fits a camp chair's cupholder. YETI says the slim design does.
  • You want a lining that resists stains from red wine and other acidic drinks.

Skip this if:

  • You need a lid that seals. YETI says the MagSlider "is not leakproof and will not prevent spills."
  • You want one cup for everything. At 10 oz, it's small for coffee or water. The YETI 14 oz Stackable Mug is the better all-rounder.
  • Every cupboard inch is taken. A pair of these is a nice extra, not an essential.

What it is

The tumbler is two walls of 18/8 stainless steel with a vacuum between them. The vacuum slows heat transfer, so a chilled white or rosé stays cold longer than in an uninsulated glass, and the outside doesn't sweat in your hand on a humid evening. YETI doesn't publish an hours-cold figure for this tumbler on the page we checked. It says the insulation keeps drinks "the perfect temp" and hot or cold "from the first sip to the last." We won't put a number on it.

DuraSip ceramic lining. YETI describes this as "a nonstick, no-mess interior that resists staining from highly acidic beverages," fused to the 18/8 stainless steel. Asked whether it's actually ceramic, YETI says it's easy to clean and scratch resistant, but "unlike traditional ceramic it's fused to 18/8 stainless steel," so it's "tough enough to take a tumble." The practical point for wine is taste and staining. Some drinkers notice a metallic edge from bare steel, and a lining is the usual fix. That's subjective, but it's the main reason to choose the ceramic-lined version.

MagSlider lid. A clear lid with a slider held on by magnets. Slide it open to drink, closed to keep insects and dust out. YETI's marketing line is that it'll "keep black flies out of your chardonnay," and that's the right expectation. It's a cover, not a seal. YETI's page states, "This magnet slider is not leakproof and will not prevent spills."

The Amazon listing gives 4.6 inches tall and 3.4 inches wide, which is close to YETI's figures.

How it fits a van or camp kitchen

Stability. A stemless cup with a flat base puts its weight low. That matters on a folding table, a cooler lid, a sloping parking spot or a camp chair armrest. If you use a table such as the GCI Compact Camp Table 20, a low cup is less likely to go over when someone bumps the table.

Camp-chair cupholders. YETI says the "slim design ... slips into your camp chair's cupholder." Camp-chair cupholders vary, so check yours, but a 3.4-inch cup fits more of them than most insulated mugs. The ALPS King Kong Chair is one of the chairs on this site with a built-in cupholder.

Storage. At 4.5 inches tall, two tumblers fit in a small drawer or a cabinet with a divider. They're steel, so they'll rattle against other metal on rough roads. A cloth wrap or a silicone divider fixes that. Our guide to stopping van kitchen rattles has more ideas.

Not for driving. Because the lid isn't leakproof, this isn't a cup for a moving vehicle. Finish it, or pour it out, before you drive. If you want a drink with a lid that locks, the Owala FreeSip or Stanley IceFlow tumbler suit that job, for water or cold drinks.

Hot drinks. YETI says the insulation keeps hot drinks hot too, so a tumbler can serve as a small cup for tea or mulled wine on a cold night. There's no handle, but the vacuum wall keeps the outside from getting too hot to hold. For morning coffee, a mug with a handle such as the Stackable Mug is easier.

Keeping wine at temperature in a van

An insulated cup slows warming once the wine is poured. It doesn't chill the bottle. In a van, the bottle is the harder part. A parked van in summer gets far hotter inside than the air outside, and a bottle left in a cabinet will be warm by evening. The usual approaches are to keep whites and rosés in the 12V fridge door, or in a cooler such as the YETI Hopper M30 with ice, and to keep reds low in the van, away from windows and the roof. Our guide to keeping a van cool without AC covers where heat builds up. Pour a smaller glass and top it up rather than filling to the brim, and the tumbler's insulation has less work to do.

How it compares with the YETI Stackable Mug

Both are YETI Rambler drinkware with a DuraSip ceramic lining and a MagSlider lid, so the obvious question is whether you need both.

If you'll only ever own one insulated cup, the mug is more versatile. If you want a dedicated evening cup that's lighter, slimmer and fits a chair, the tumbler is the better shape. Many people end up with one of each.

Cleaning and care

YETI says the tumbler is dishwasher safe, like all Rambler drinkware. In a van you'll usually hand-wash. The ceramic lining's main practical benefit is that wine residue and stains come off with less scrubbing than on bare steel, according to YETI's description. Pop the MagSlider off the lid to clean behind it, because sugary drinks collect there.

Avoid abrasive scourers inside. YETI calls the lining scratch resistant, not scratch proof, and a gentle sponge is all a smooth lining needs.

Limitations

  • Lid isn't leakproof. YETI says so on the product page.
  • Small. 10 oz is a glass of wine or a cocktail, not a water bottle.
  • No published hold time. YETI doesn't give hours-cold or hours-hot figures for this tumbler.
  • No handle. Fine for cold drinks; less comfortable for hot ones.
  • A premium price for a cup. The insulation and lining are the reasons to pay it. If you only want unbreakable, a plain steel cup does that for less.

Verdict

The YETI Rambler 10 oz Wine Tumbler with DuraSip ceramic lining is an evening cup for a camp or van kitchen. It's stainless, so it won't shatter. It's low and slim, so it's harder to tip over and fits many camp-chair cupholders, according to YETI. And its ceramic lining is meant to resist stains and keep the drink tasting like itself. Its limits are equally plain: a 10 oz capacity and a lid that YETI says isn't leakproof. If you want wine or a cocktail outside without packing glass, it's a sensible upgrade. If you want one cup for everything, start with the Stackable Mug.

FAQ

Is the YETI 10 oz Wine Tumbler leakproof? No. YETI's product page says the MagSlider lid "is not leakproof and will not prevent spills." It keeps bugs and dust out, but it doesn't seal.

What is DuraSip ceramic lining? YETI describes it as a nonstick, stain-resistant interior fused to 18/8 stainless steel. Unlike a ceramic glass or mug, it's bonded to steel, so YETI says it's tough enough to survive a drop.

Does the YETI wine tumbler fit a cupholder? YETI says its slim design slips into a camp chair's cupholder. It's 3.4 inches wide, so it fits many holders, but check yours.

Can I put hot drinks in the YETI wine tumbler? YETI says the double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks hot or cold. There's no handle, so for coffee a mug is more comfortable.

Is it dishwasher safe? Yes. YETI says all Rambler drinkware, including this tumbler, is dishwasher safe.

How is this different from the YETI 14 oz Stackable Mug? The tumbler is slimmer, lighter (0.55 lb against about 1 lb) and has no handle. The mug is wider, holds 14 oz and has a welded handle. Both have a DuraSip lining and a MagSlider lid.
