A 12V compressor fridge is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade for van life. It means fresh vegetables, cold drinks, safe leftovers, and actual meal planning instead of relying on ice and coolers. Modern 12V fridges run directly from your vehicle's electrical system and draw surprisingly little power — manufacturers' ratings mostly fall between 1 and 4 amp-hours per hour, depending on ambient temperature and how often you open the lid.

Size matters more than you think. A 35L fridge suits solo travelers or couples who shop every few days. Families or meal-preppers should look at 45–60L models. Pay attention to the compressor brand (Secop/Danfoss compressors have a long track record), low-voltage cutoff settings (to protect your starter battery), and whether the fridge fits your van's floor plan. Top-opening models are more efficient but harder to organize; front-opening models waste more cold air but offer better access.

Then we check the conditions behind those numbers, because consumption in hot climates and full-time use usually runs above the brochure figure.
How to choose
Chest or upright?
Chest (top-opening) portable fridges are the usual van choice: they lose less cold when opened, strap down almost anywhere and can move between vehicles. Built-in uprights open like a house fridge and suit a fixed galley, but they need a cabinet, ventilation to the maker's spec and a permanent install.
Single zone or dual zone?
A single zone runs as a fridge or a freezer. A dual zone holds frozen and fresh food at the same time, at the cost of a bigger box, more weight and a higher daily energy draw.
What size?
Size it from how many people eat from it and how many days you go between shops; the sizing guide below works through the numbers. A bigger fridge also draws more energy, so match it to your battery and charging.

It makes a top-opening fridge reachable under a counter, but it costs considerably more than universal slides, isn't listed for the CFX2 45, and needs bolting to solid structure.

ARB's manual lists 90 kWh a year, about 19 Ah a day at 12.8 V, but gives no test conditions. At 70 lb it's a fridge for exposed, permanent mounting rather than a cabinet.
