Engel HD30 High Performance Soft-Sided Tote Cooler Bag, Dark Gray & Seafoam (HD30-GSF)
For: Sealed multi-day soft cooler

We recommend the Engel HD30 High Performance Soft-Sided Tote Cooler Bag, Dark Gray & Seafoam (HD30-GSF)
“The Engel HD30 is the better soft cooler for most van and car campers who need food kept cold past a day: it seals with a welded waterproof zipper, Engel claims 3 to 4 days of ice, it weighs 5.25 lb against 6.8, and it costs less. The YETI Hopper M30 is the better drinks cooler, because its magnetic closure opens one-handed where the Engel's zipper is stiff, and it carries a 3-year warranty against Engel's 1 year.”

The short answer
For most van and car campers who want a soft cooler that keeps food cold for more than a day, the Engel HD30 is the better buy. It seals with a welded waterproof zipper, its seams are welded rather than sewn, Engel claims it holds ice for 3 to 4 days, and it's lighter (5.25 pounds against 6.8) and costs less than the YETI.
The YETI Hopper M30 is the better choice for a drinks cooler or anything you open often. Its MagShield magnetic closure snaps open and shut with one hand, where the Engel's zipper is stiff and needs lubrication. It also carries a 3-year warranty against Engel's 1 year. YETI doesn't publish an ice-retention figure for it.

Closure: zipper vs magnets
This is the main difference, and it decides most purchases.
Engel HD30. A welded, waterproof and air-resistant zipper. Engel says it "requires lubrication for optimum function", and in the Q&A on its product page recommends storing the bag with the zipper open a few inches so it can vent. Waterproof zippers seal because they're tight, so expect two hands and a deliberate pull every time.
YETI Hopper M30. MagShield Access: a strip of magnets that holds the wide mouth open and snaps it shut with a push, backed by two quick-release buckles. YETI describes the liner as leakproof and the closure as "ultra leak-resistant", which isn't the same as waterproof. Keep it upright.
In a van, the difference shows up in how often you open the cooler. A drinks cooler gets opened every few minutes on a warm afternoon, and the magnets win easily. A food cooler gets opened a few times a day, and the zipper's tighter seal matters more than its slower access.
Edge: YETI for access; Engel for sealing.
Ice retention
Engel says the HD30 holds ice for up to 3 to 4 days, and separately cites an unnamed independent review that found it kept beverages cold for 4.5 days in 90-degree temperatures. It doesn't state ice quantity, pre-chilling or lid openings, so treat both as best cases. Engel's welded seams, sealed zipper and vacuum valve, which lets you pull air out of the walls before use, are the reasons it gives.
YETI doesn't publish a figure for the Hopper M30. It says its ColdCell foam "offers impressive cold-holding capabilities" and recommends pairing it with a YETI Large Ice Sheet.
There's no like-for-like number to compare. On construction, a welded zipper should leak less cold air than a magnetic strip, which supports Engel's longer claim. Neither soft cooler will match a hard cooler with two to three inches of foam. Plan on either for a day to a long weekend, not a week.
Edge: Engel, for a stated claim and a tighter seal.
Size and fit in a van
The two hold a similar amount. By each maker's interior dimensions, the Engel works out to about 37 quarts and the YETI to about 39, our arithmetic. Their can counts differ a lot, 60 for the Engel and 42 for the YETI, but the boxes inside are close, so read the counts as different counting methods rather than a real gap.
Shape. The Engel is shorter and slightly taller: 22 inches long against 25.2. That three inches can matter in a footwell or the gap beside a 12V fridge. The YETI is slightly lower at 17.3 inches.
Weight. The Engel is 1.55 pounds lighter empty. Both are easy one-person carries when loaded for a day.
Leaks. Both have leakproof liners. The Engel's waterproof zipper keeps meltwater in if the bag tips over; the YETI's magnetic closure may not. In a moving vehicle, strap either upright.
Edge: Engel, narrowly, for a shorter body and a sealed closure.
Build and features
Engel: 840-denier shell with TPU film laminated front and back, one inch of closed-cell foam, welded seams, vacuum valve, shoulder strap and tote handles, integrated bottle opener, water-resistant front pocket. Made in China, per Engel.
YETI: DryHide high-density shell that YETI says resists punctures and UV, ColdCell closed-cell foam, RF-welded liner, double-stitched carry points, HitchPoint grid for clipping accessories, and mildew-resistant treatment inside and out.
Both are well made. The YETI's HitchPoint grid and mildew treatment are nice touches; the Engel's vacuum valve is unusual. YETI says Hopper soft coolers aren't compatible with dry ice. Engel's page doesn't address dry ice, so don't assume either can take it.
Edge: even.
Warranty
YETI covers the Hopper M30 for 3 years. Engel covers the HD30 for 1 year. If you're hard on gear, that's a real point for the YETI.
Edge: YETI.
Value
The Engel HD30 costs less than the YETI Hopper M30 and, on paper, holds ice longer. The YETI's extra cost buys a faster closure, a longer warranty and YETI's accessory system. If you want the most cold for the money, buy the Engel. If you want convenience and a longer warranty, and you'll mostly use it for drinks or day trips, the YETI earns its premium. Check current prices on Amazon, since they change often.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Engel HD30 if:
- You want a soft cooler that keeps food cold overnight and into a second or third day.
- You'll use it as an overflow food cooler beside a 12V fridge.
- You want it to stay sealed if it tips over.
Buy the YETI Hopper M30 if:
- It's mainly a drinks cooler that gets opened all day.
- You want one-handed access.
- You value a 3-year warranty over Engel's 1 year.
One sensible setup splits the jobs: a fridge or hard cooler for food, and a soft cooler for drinks. In that role, the Hopper's quick closure makes more sense. If the soft cooler is your main or only cooler, choose the Engel.
FAQ
Which holds ice longer, the Engel HD30 or the YETI Hopper M30?
