Zojirushi SM-SHE48 vs YETI Rambler 14oz Stackable Mug
A sealed travel mug against a wide camp mug for your morning coffee. The deciding question is whether you drink it parked or on the move.

Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug, 16 ounce, Black Matte (SM-SHE48BZ)
For: Hot coffee while driving

We recommend the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug, 16 ounce, Black Matte (SM-SHE48BZ)
“The Zojirushi SM-SHE48 is the better everyday coffee mug for most van lifers because it works on the road and parked: a locking lid, a slim body that fits many cupholders, and published heat figures of 158°F after six hours from 203°F water. The YETI Stackable Mug is nicer at a campsite table, with a handle, a ceramic lining and a stackable base, but YETI says it doesn't fit most cupholders and its lid is splash-resistant, not sealed.”

The short answer
For most van lifers, the Zojirushi SM-SHE48 is the better everyday coffee mug, because it works both on the road and when parked. Its flip-open lid locks shut, its slim 2-7/8-inch body fits many cupholders, it weighs about 9 ounces, and Zojirushi publishes heat figures under stated conditions: water starting at 203°F in a 68°F room is still 158°F after six hours.
The YETI Rambler 14 oz Stackable Mug is the better mug at a campsite table. It has a handle, a wide mouth, a ceramic lining that YETI says resists coffee stains, and a base that stacks with other mugs. But YETI says it doesn't fit most cupholders, and its MagSlider lid is splash-resistant, not sealed, so it isn't a driving mug.

Lid: sealed vs splash-resistant
This decides it for most people.
Zojirushi. A flip-open lid with a safety lock that, in Zojirushi's words, prevents the lid "from opening accidentally". A two-step release stops condensation on the stopper being flung off as it opens, and an air vent in the mouthpiece lets coffee flow smoothly. With the lock on, it can ride in a bag, a door pocket or a cupholder.
YETI. A clear MagSlider lid with a magnetic slider over the drinking opening. YETI describes it as splash-resistant, and our YETI review is clear that it's a splash guard, not a seal. If the mug tips, coffee comes out.
Edge: Zojirushi, clearly, for anything that moves.
Heat retention
Zojirushi states its conditions: water starting at 203°F (95°C) in a 68°F (20°C) room is 187°F after one hour and 158°F after six, with the lid closed. For cold, 40°F water is 46°F after six hours.
YETI makes no fixed hours claim for the Stackable Mug. It says the insulation keeps drinks hot "until the last sip".
Both are double-wall vacuum insulated. The difference that matters in use is the lid and the mouth. A narrow, sealed mouth loses less heat than a wide mouth under a vented slider. Preheat either mug with hot water before you pour.
Edge: Zojirushi, for published, conditioned figures and a design that keeps heat in.
Drinking at camp
The YETI is the nicer mug to hold at a picnic table. It has a welded handle, a wide 5.1-inch body you can wrap a cold hand around, and enough room that YETI suggests it as a camp bowl for oatmeal or soup. YETI says its DuraSip ceramic lining resists staining from acidic drinks like coffee and is easy to clean, which helps if you switch between coffee, tea and soup.
The Zojirushi is a travel mug. You drink through a mouthpiece, there's no handle, and its 1-5/8-inch mouth is too narrow to eat from.
Edge: YETI.
Fit and storage in a van
Cupholders. YETI says the Stackable Mug isn't designed to fit most cupholders. The Zojirushi is 2-5/8 by 2-7/8 inches, which suits many. Measure yours.
Cabinets. The YETI stacks with other mugs of the same size or smaller with the lids off, so two people's mugs take about one mug's footprint. The Zojirushi is tall and narrow, at 8-5/8 inches, and fits a door bin or tall drawer.
Weight. The Zojirushi is about 9 ounces and the YETI about a pound. In a van, neither matters much.
Edge: Zojirushi for cupholders; YETI for stacking.
Cleaning
YETI lists the Stackable Mug as dishwasher safe, and its wide mouth and ceramic lining make hand washing easy. Pop the slider out every few days.
Zojirushi's page doesn't say the SM-SHE48 is dishwasher safe, so plan to hand wash it. Its stopper comes apart for cleaning, which you should do every few days, because coffee and milk residue sit in the lock and vent. The narrow mouth needs a bottle brush.
Edge: YETI.
Value
The Zojirushi SM-SHE48 costs less than the YETI Stackable Mug. For that, you get a sealed, locking lid, documented heat performance and a lighter mug. The YETI's extra cost buys a ceramic lining, a handle, a stackable base and a nicer drink at camp. Check current prices on Amazon, since they change often.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Zojirushi SM-SHE48 if:
- You drive most mornings and want hot coffee that can't spill.
- You want coffee still hot hours after you brew it.
- You need it to fit a cupholder or ride in a bag.
Buy the YETI Stackable Mug if:
- You drink coffee parked, at a table or on the step.
- You want a handle, a wide mouth and a ceramic lining.
- You also want a mug that works as a camp bowl.
The two don't really compete, and carrying one of each is a reasonable answer: a mug for slow parked mornings and a sealed travel mug for driving days. If you're only buying one and you drive often, buy the Zojirushi.
FAQ
Which keeps coffee hot longer, the Zojirushi or the YETI mug?
Zojirushi publishes figures: water starting at 203°F is 158°F after six hours in a 68°F room with the lid closed. YETI doesn't publish a fixed figure for the Stackable Mug. The Zojirushi's sealed, narrow mouth loses less heat than the YETI's wide, vented one.
Can you drive with the YETI Stackable Mug?
YETI says it isn't designed to fit most cupholders, and its MagSlider lid is splash-resistant rather than sealed. It's a mug for when you're parked.
Does the Zojirushi SM-SHE48 fit in a cupholder?
Zojirushi lists it at 2-5/8 x 2-7/8 inches wide and deep, which suits many cupholders. Measure yours.
Which is easier to clean?
The YETI. It's listed as dishwasher safe and has a wide mouth. The Zojirushi needs hand washing, a bottle brush and regular cleaning of the stopper parts.
Which holds more?
The Zojirushi holds 16 ounces and the YETI 14.
