Overview: who is the Zojirushi SM-SHE48 for?

The Zojirushi SM-SHE48 is a slim 16-ounce vacuum-insulated travel mug with a flip-open lid that locks shut. It's the sealed hot-coffee mug for the drive. Zojirushi publishes unusually specific heat figures for it: starting with 203°F water in a 68°F room, the coffee is still 187°F after one hour and 158°F after six. It weighs about 9 ounces, is 2-7/8 inches across at its widest, and has an electro-polished interior Zojirushi calls SlickSteel.

What the Amazon link sells: "Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug, 16 ounce, Black Matte", ASIN B074L2PBYB, Zojirushi part and model number SM-SHE48BZ. Zojirushi's own store lists SM-SHE48BZ as the 16-ounce (0.48-liter) SM-SHE in Matte Black. The 20-ounce SM-SHE60 and other colours are separate listings.

The existing hot-drink mug on this site, the YETI Rambler 14 oz Stackable Mug, is a camp mug for parked mornings: wide, squat, with a splash-resistant slider lid that YETI says doesn't fit most cupholders. That review recommends a bottle with a sealed lid for driving. The Zojirushi is that mug. We compare the two in Zojirushi SM-SHE48 vs YETI Stackable Mug.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from Zojirushi's product page and the Amazon listing we link to. See how we research.

Choose this if:

  • You want hot coffee or tea that stays hot through a long morning of driving.
  • You want a lid that locks closed so the mug can ride in a bag, a door pocket or a cupholder.
  • You want a light, slim mug. It weighs about 9 ounces empty and is 2-7/8 inches across at its widest.

Skip this if:

  • You want a mug to hold at a campsite table. A handle and wide mouth, like the YETI Stackable Mug's, are nicer to drink from while parked.
  • You want to add ice cubes. The 1-5/8-inch mouth is narrow.
  • You want more than 16 ounces. The 20-ounce SM-SHE60 is the bigger size.

Test conditions. Zojirushi is one of the few drinkware makers that states them. Its heat figure starts with water at 203°F (95°C) in a 68°F (20°C) room. Its cold figure starts with water at 40°F (4°C) in a 68°F room. That makes these numbers more useful than a bare "hot for X hours" claim. They tell you the actual temperature, not just "hot".

Zojirushi's page lists the weight in its own "lbs. oz." format as 0.09, which reads as 0 pounds 9 ounces. The Amazon listing gives about 0.56 pounds, which is the same 9 ounces.

Zojirushi's product page lists a flip-open lid with a safety lock, a two-step lid release that "prevents excess condensation on the stopper from being flung off while the lid opens", an air vent in the mouthpiece so drinks "flow out smoothly, without gushing or overflowing", a stopper that disassembles for cleaning, a 1-5/8-inch mouth, and BPA-free plastic with 18/8 stainless steel. The interior is electro-polished SlickSteel, which Zojirushi says resists corrosion and repels stains.

What the numbers mean for coffee

By Zojirushi's figures, a full mug filled with near-boiling water is still 187°F after an hour, which is too hot to sip for many people, and 158°F after six hours, which is still a hot drink. In plain terms, coffee you pour at 7 a.m. is still properly hot at lunch.

Two caveats. First, those figures are for a full mug with the lid closed the whole time. Every time you open it to drink, warm air leaves and the drink cools faster. Second, coffee you pour from a brewer is usually cooler than 203°F by the time it's in the mug, so start-of-day temperatures will be a little lower.

Preheat it. Pour in hot water, close it for a minute, tip it out and fill with coffee. The inner wall won't steal heat from your first fill.

Cold drinks. By Zojirushi's figure, 40°F water is 46°F after six hours in a 68°F room. That's cold. On a hot day in a parked van, expect it to warm faster.

How it fits a van

Driving. This is what it's for. The safety lock keeps the lid shut until you press the release, so it can ride in a cupholder, a door pocket or a bag without spilling. At 2-7/8 inches across at its widest, it should fit most vehicle cupholders, but measure yours: some are wider and the mug may rattle, which a cupholder insert fixes. The two-step release means you thumb the lock, then the lid, which is easy one-handed at a stop. Don't fiddle with any drink while driving; take a sip at a light or a stop.

Saving energy. Brewing once in the morning and keeping coffee hot all day avoids running a stove or kettle again. If you boil water on induction from a power station, our power budget guide shows what a second kettle costs. For a larger shared batch, the Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle 1.5 QT holds 48 ounces for pouring.

Brewing straight into it. The mouth is narrow at 1-5/8 inches, so pour from a kettle spout or a brewer carafe rather than a wide pot. If you brew with an AeroPress or a pour-over, brew into a carafe or another cup and pour across. Our coffee guide and AeroPress vs Hario V60 comparison cover van brewing methods.

Storage. At 8-5/8 inches tall and under 3 inches wide, it fits a door bin, a tall drawer or a bottle sleeve.

Cleaning

The stopper disassembles for cleaning, per Zojirushi. That matters on a mug with a lock, vent and gasket, because coffee and milk residue sit in the small parts. Take it apart every few days and wash each piece, then let them dry before reassembling. The narrow mouth means you need a bottle brush for the body. The SlickSteel interior is designed to resist stains, but coffee film still builds up if you leave it.

Zojirushi's product page doesn't say the mug is dishwasher safe, so plan to hand wash it and follow the instruction sheet that comes with the mug. Our dishwashing system guide has a low-water routine.

What not to do

  • Don't microwave it or put it on a burner. It's double-wall stainless steel.
  • Don't fill it with carbonated or fermenting drinks and seal it. Pressure builds behind a locking lid.
  • Leave dairy and sweet drinks in it as briefly as you can. Milk sitting warm for hours spoils, and residue in the lid parts is hard to clean out.

Limitations

  • Narrow mouth. Hard to add ice cubes or clean without a brush.
  • No handle. Less comfortable at a campsite table than a camp mug.
  • Dishwasher use isn't stated on Zojirushi's page.
  • Small parts in the lid need regular cleaning.
  • 16 ounces may be one coffee short for a long drive.

How it compares

Value

The SM-SHE48 is a budget-to-mid-range travel mug with published, conditioned heat figures and a 5-year warranty on its vacuum heat retention. For the price class, that's a lot of documented performance. Check current pricing on Amazon, since it changes often.

Final verdict

The Zojirushi SM-SHE48 is the hot-coffee mug for the driving day. Its locking lid seals, its slim body fits most cupholders, and Zojirushi's heat figures, stated under real test conditions, show coffee still hot after six hours. It's less pleasant than a handled camp mug at a picnic table, and the lid parts need regular cleaning, but for coffee on the move, it's the most capable mug we cover.
