Helinox Chair One Review: The Camp Chair That Packs the Size of a Water Bottle
Seating is the part of a camp kitchen people forget to plan storage for. A typical steel-frame camp chair folds into a bag about 3 feet long, and two of them take a big slice of a cargo floor or garage. The Helinox Chair One is a common answer when storage is the problem. It's a shock-corded aluminium pole frame with a fabric seat that packs into a case 14 inches long and about 4.5 inches across, weighs about 2 pounds, and is rated for 320 pounds.
What the Amazon link sells: the Helinox Chair One Original, model 10001R1, in black. Helinox now also sells a redesigned Chair One (re), with recycled fabric, a taller seat and a second tension line, and a Chair One Highback. Those are separate products with different dimensions. This page covers the Original.
This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from Helinox's product page and the Amazon listing this page links to. Comfort and fit notes are reasoned from those published dimensions and from how camp kitchens are commonly set up.
Choose this if:
- You need seating that fits in a door pocket, a drawer or a gap beside the fridge.
- You want a chair light enough to carry to a viewpoint, beach or fire ring away from the van.
- You'll pair it with a low table, such as the GCI Compact Camp Table 20, for coffee and meals.
Skip this if:
- You find low chairs hard to get out of, or you have knee or hip trouble. The seat sits close to the ground.
- You mostly camp on sand or soft ground and don't want to buy accessory feet.
- You want armrests, a cup holder, or a chair you can sit at a 28 to 30 inch table in.
What it is
The Chair One is a frame of aluminium poles joined by internal shock cords, plugged into two moulded hubs, with a fabric seat that hooks over the four upper pole ends. To set it up, you unfold the poles (they snap together), then stretch the seat's corner pockets over the frame. Taking it down is the reverse. There's nothing to bolt or adjust.
Helinox uses its own DAC TH72M aluminium alloy for the frame, and the seat is a 600D polyester with polyester mesh panels. The fabric hangs like a sling, so you sit in the chair, slightly reclined, rather than on a flat seat.

Seat height. This is the one figure to be careful with. Helinox's spec table labels 25.5 inches as "Seat Height," but that matches the chair's overall height on the Amazon listing, so it appears to be the top of the backrest. The Amazon listing gives a seat height of 9 inches and a backrest height of 16.5 inches. We couldn't confirm a seat height on Helinox's own page. Either way, it is a low chair, much lower than a dining chair (typically around 17 to 19 inches). If seat height matters to you, compare it with the 19-inch seat height ALPS publishes for the King Kong.
Materials. Helinox lists the frame as DAC TH72M aluminium alloy with resin hubs, the seat as bluesign-certified 600D polyester with recycled polyester mesh, and the case as 300D ripstop. The Amazon listing says the seat and case are machine washable.
How it fits a van or camp kitchen
Storage is where it earns its place. Packed, two Chair Ones are roughly the size of two 1-litre water bottles. They fit in a door bin, under a seat, in a drawer next to the cookware, or in the gap between a fridge and a cabinet. That's space a full-size folding chair simply can't use. In a car camper or a small van where every bin is spoken for, it's often the difference between bringing chairs and sitting on the step.
It suits low-table cooking and eating. At its low seat height, the Chair One pairs naturally with a low side table: a coffee by the van in the morning, a plate on a 24-inch table at dinner. It doesn't pair well with a standard-height table like the GCI Slim-Fold Cook Station. The table will be at chest height.
It isn't a cooking chair. If you cook seated, you'll want a chair that puts you at or above the stove, not below it. Reaching up and over a hot pot from a low sling seat isn't a good position. Cook standing, then sit.
Setup takes a minute or two. It gets quicker with practice, though stretching the last seat corner over the frame can take some effort when the fabric is new.
Stability and uneven ground
The Chair One stands on four small rubber-capped feet at the ends of its lower poles. On hard ground, a campsite pad or a deck, that's fine, and the cross-braced frame is stable for its weight. On sand, soft soil or wet grass, small feet concentrate the load and tend to sink, and the chair can tip backwards as the rear feet sink first.
Helinox sells accessory Ball Feet and Vibram Ball Feet, which fit over the pole ends and spread the load. If you camp on beaches or desert sand, budget for them, or put the chair on a flat board or mat.
The sling seat also means you can't sit on the front edge and lean forward the way you might on a rigid chair, so getting up uses more effort, especially for taller or heavier people. That's a comfort point, not a structural one; Helinox rates the chair at 320 pounds.
Durability and care
The frame poles and hubs are the parts that take the load. Helinox backs the chair with a 5-year warranty. To keep it in good shape:
- Seat the poles fully into the hubs before you sit. A half-seated pole puts load on the hub's edge.
- Keep sand and grit out of the pole joints. Shake the poles out before packing them.
- Wash the seat according to Helinox's care instructions and let it dry before storing in the case, so it doesn't mildew in a damp van.
- Don't stand on it or use it as a step into a high-roof van.
Limitations
- Low seat. Hard for some people to get in and out of; not for a standard table.
- Small feet. Sink in sand and soft ground without the accessory feet.
- No armrests or cup holder. It's a minimal chair by design.
- Assembly every time. Fast, but not the one-motion opening of a folding chair.
- Seat height isn't clearly published. Helinox's and Amazon's figures don't line up.
- The Original isn't the newest version. The Chair One (re) has a taller seat and different dimensions; check which you're buying.

Verdict
The Helinox Chair One Original is the chair to buy when packed size decides everything. Helinox's figures, 14 by 4.5 by 4.5 inches packed, about 2 pounds and a 320 lb rating, are hard to match with a conventional folding chair, and the 5-year warranty is long for camp furniture. The compromises are real: a low sling seat that some people find hard to leave, small feet that sink in soft ground without accessory feet, and assembly each time. If you have room for a bulkier chair and value a higher seat and armrests, a quad-fold chair suits you better.
FAQ
How small does the Helinox Chair One pack? Helinox lists the packed size as 14 by 4.5 by 4.5 inches, and the packed weight as 2 pounds 2 ounces including the case.
How much weight does it hold? Helinox rates the Chair One at 320 pounds (145 kg).
What's the seat height? Sources don't agree. Helinox's spec table labels 25.5 inches as seat height, but that matches the overall height. The Amazon listing gives a 9-inch seat height and a 16.5-inch backrest. It is a low chair, well below a dining chair.
Does it work on sand? The standard feet tend to sink in sand and soft ground. Helinox sells Ball Feet and Vibram Ball Feet accessories that spread the load.
What's the difference between Chair One Original and Chair One (re)? The (re) is Helinox's redesign, with recycled fabric, a taller seat, a second tension line and a frame made from repurposed aluminium, according to its Amazon listing. Its packed size is slightly larger. This page covers the Original, model 10001R1.
Can I use it at a normal-height camp table? Not comfortably. It sits low, so it pairs best with a low side table. For a 28 to 30 inch table, a chair with a higher seat works better.
What warranty does it have? Helinox and the Amazon listing both give a 5-year warranty.

For: Full-height camp seating
ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair, Clay (8140317)
A big steel-frame quad-fold chair with a 19-inch seat height, an 800 lb rating, a quilted seat, and armrests with cup holders and pockets. It sets up in one motion and is easy to get in and out of, but at 13 lb and 40 x 8 x 9 inches packed it takes far more van space than a pole chair.

For: Full outdoor cook station
GCI Outdoor Slim-Fold Cook Station (15026)
A one-piece folding camp kitchen: a 52-inch-wide frame with a heat-resistant aluminium main top that GCI says is for camp stoves, four fold-out side tables, a lower rack and hooks. It folds to 3.7 inches thick but stays about 21 by 35 inches, weighs 18.9 lb, and its 48 lb top rating is modest, so check the folded size against your van before you buy.

For: Small stove stand
GCI Outdoor Compact Camp Table 20 (39126)
A small one-piece aluminium table that folds flat to 2 inches thick and weighs 4 lb, with a 60 lb rating and a top GCI describes as heat resistant and safe for a small camp stove. It's a stove stand or side table for two, not a full prep counter: the surface is 20 by 18 inches and it stands 24 inches high.
