Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light Review: A Magnetic Aluminium Lantern for the Galley
A van galley has a lot of steel in it: the van's own body panels, the edges of a cooktop, the frame of a fridge slide, a steel shelf bracket. A lantern with a magnet in the base can stick to any of them and throw light straight down on the counter. The Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light is built around that kind of flexibility. Ledlenser lists a rubber hook, an integrated magnet, and a removable stand with a second flip-out metal hook, so it can hang, stick or stand. It puts out up to 750 lumens of warm 2500 to 3000K light from an aluminium body sealed to IP66, and it doubles as a small power bank.
What the Amazon link sells: the listing titled "Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light Lantern, 750 lm, Triple Mount, IP66, Micro Prism", part number 502084 (ASIN B08C95P9J4). Ledlenser also sells a cool-white ML6 (item 500929) under a separate listing; this review covers the Warm Light version, 502084. When we checked, Amazon showed it in stock.
This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. The specs come from Ledlenser's product page and technical data, and from the Amazon listing.
Choose this if:
- You want one lantern that can stick to steel, hang from a hook or stand on a table, so it can light the galley counter or the table outside.
- You prefer warm light for evenings, which is easier on the eyes and less harsh on food than cool white.
- You want a replaceable battery rather than a sealed one. The ML6 ships with an 18650 cell.
Skip this if:
- You want USB-C charging. Ledlenser's scope of delivery lists a USB-A to micro-USB cable, and the charge time is about 5 hours.
- You want the most battery for charging a phone. At 3,000 mAh, it holds less than half the energy of the BioLite AlpenGlow 500.
- You want a red mode for night vision. Ledlenser lists none for the ML6 Warm Light.
What it is
The ML6 Warm Light is a cylindrical lantern, 178 mm tall and 42 mm across, in an aluminium alloy body. Ledlenser uses what it calls micro prism technology in the diffuser, which it says gives efficient, glare-free and targeted light. Three switches control it, with a built-in battery indicator, and the output can be smoothly dimmed and brightened rather than stepping between fixed levels. Glow-in-the-dark elements help you find it in the dark.
Power comes from an 18650 lithium-ion cell, which Ledlenser lists in the box as a 3,000 mAh rechargeable battery. Because it's a standard size, it can be swapped for a charged spare. A USB port lets the lantern charge a phone or other device.

Conflicts and gaps. The Amazon listing quotes a 240-hour runtime on low; Ledlenser's technical data gives 200 hours. Plan on 200. Ledlenser doesn't publish a runtime at the 750-lumen Boost level or the power bank's output current, and it doesn't name the test standard behind its figures. Ledlenser's page offers a 7-year warranty when you register the product, subject to its terms.
Energy, our estimate. A 3,000 mAh 18650 cell at a typical 3.6 V nominal holds about 10.8 Wh. Ledlenser doesn't give a Wh figure, so treat that as our estimate. Recharging it from a 12 V house battery through a USB adapter would take about 12 to 13 Wh including adapter losses, roughly 1 Ah at 12.8 V.
How it fits a van or camp kitchen
Magnetic mounting is the galley feature. Inside most vans, the bare steel of the body is exposed above the windows, around the sliding door frame and in the ceiling ribs before panelling goes on. Even in a finished van, a steel shelf bracket or a range hood edge can hold a magnetic lantern. Ledlenser says the integrated magnet is for mounting on metal surfaces, and it doesn't publish a holding force, so don't hang it upside down above a hot cooktop or anywhere it could fall onto a burner. A side-mounted spot, beside the counter rather than above the stove, is the safer choice.
Warm light suits cooking. Ledlenser rates the ML6 Warm Light at 2500 to 3000K, the same warm range as household bulbs. Warm light is easier on the eyes after dark and makes food look natural. The CRI of 80 is adequate for cooking, though it's below the CRI 90 that BioLite quotes for the AlpenGlow 500. You can still judge doneness, but high-CRI light shows colours like the pink of chicken a little more accurately.
How much light. For a counter or a small outdoor table, a few hundred lumens is plenty. The 550-lumen Power mode lasts 3.5 hours by Ledlenser's figure, and because the output dims smoothly, you can run it lower for a longer evening. The 5-lumen Low mode is a night light that runs for days. Our power budget guide shows how small USB loads like this fit into a daily battery plan.
Charging. The ML6 charges through micro-USB, taking about 5 hours by Ledlenser's figure. Keep a micro-USB cable in the van, since most other modern gear has moved to USB-C. A spare 18650 cell is an alternative to waiting for a recharge; use a quality cell of the same type and charge it with a proper charger.
Weather. IP66 means the lantern is protected against dust and powerful water jets. It can sit out in rain on the outdoor table. It isn't rated for submersion.
Why an LED lantern, not a flame
Candle lanterns and gas lanterns burn fuel, which means carbon monoxide, open flame and heat, and fuel-burning lanterns are generally labelled for outdoor use. An LED lantern like the ML6 has none of those problems, so it's the right kind of light to use inside a van. Our van cooking safety guide covers why fuel-burning appliances belong outdoors.
Care
Dry the lantern, and especially the charging port, before you plug it in after rain. Don't leave the lantern in a hot windscreen in summer: Ledlenser's working range tops out at 40°C, and a closed van can get much hotter. Our summer van kitchen guide covers heat and batteries. In winter, lithium cells deliver less below freezing, so keep the lantern inside the living area overnight.
Limitations
- Micro-USB charging, with a 5-hour charge time.
- Smaller battery than the AlpenGlow 500 or the Fenix CL26R Pro.
- No red light listed by Ledlenser.
- No published magnet strength, so don't hang it over a hot stove.
- Runtime conflict between Ledlenser (200 h low) and Amazon (240 h).
How it compares
- BioLite AlpenGlow 500: 500 lumens, warm and cool white with CRI 90, a 23.6 Wh battery and multicolour modes, but no magnet, an IPX4 rating and micro-USB charging. Choose the BioLite for a bigger battery and better colour, and the ML6 for magnetic mounting and better weather sealing. See Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light vs BioLite AlpenGlow 500.
- Fenix CL26R Pro: a shorter lantern with a 5,000 mAh 21700 cell, USB-C charging, a magnetic top, red modes and 650 lumens of cooler 4000 to 6800K light. It's the better technical package; the ML6 has the warmer light.
- Goal Zero Lighthouse 600: a larger lantern with a hand crank and solar input. See BioLite AlpenGlow 500 vs Goal Zero Lighthouse 600.
- BioLite AlpenGlow Mini: a much smaller hanging light for a tent or cab.
Verdict
The Ledlenser ML6 Warm Light is a well-built lantern for a van galley, mainly because it can stick to steel, hang or stand. Ledlenser's figures back up its strengths: 750 lumens at most, smooth dimming, warm 2500 to 3000K light, an IP66 aluminium body, a 1.5 m drop test and a replaceable 18650 cell. Its weaknesses come from the same data: micro-USB charging that takes about 5 hours, a 3,000 mAh battery, CRI 80 and no red mode. If those don't matter to you, it's one of the most flexible lights to keep beside the counter.
