We recommend the Sunflair Mini Portable Solar Oven Kit, Orange
“Both are soft, zip-up solar ovens that Sunflair says reach up to 285°F, and both stop cooking under full cloud cover. The Mini weighs 8 oz, folds to 2 x 11 x 13 inches and comes with one pot, which suits one or two people in a small van. The Deluxe cooks for four to eight, according to Sunflair, with a roaster, two pots, trays and dehydrating racks, at a 12 lb kit weight.”

The short answer
If you travel solo or as a couple and storage space is tight, buy the Sunflair Mini. Sunflair says the oven weighs 8 oz, the kit about 2 lb, and it folds to 2 x 11 x 13 inches. It comes with one collapsible pot, a trivet, a thermometer and a stuff bag: enough for a one-pot meal on a sunny day.
Buy the Sunflair Portable Solar Oven Deluxe if you cook for three or more, want to cook a main and a side at once, or want to dehydrate food. Sunflair says it cooks for four to eight. It opens to 24 x 18 x 8 inches and comes with a roaster, two silicone pots, two baking trays and two baking and dehydrating racks. The kit weighs 12 lb, though the oven alone is 1 lb 2 oz, and it folds to 2 x 15.5 x 19 inches.
The two ovens work the same way and face the same limits. Both are soft, zip-up box ovens that Sunflair says reach up to 285°F, both need strong, direct sun, and neither cooks under full cloud cover. The choice is about size and cookware, not performance.

Weather: the same for both
Neither size changes how much the sun matters. Sunflair's "How to use" instructions apply to both ovens:
- Clouds: it's possible to cook on partly cloudy days, but cooking takes longer, and "with full cloud cover, cooking is not possible."
- Season and latitude: four-season cooking below 40° latitude, three-season above, and a UV index of 4 or higher is best.
- Sun angle and aim: cooking is fastest with sunlight entering the chamber at about 45°. For faster cooking, re-aim every 45 minutes or as needed. If you'll leave it unattended, point it toward the midday sun.
- Wind: tie or stake the oven down on a windy day.
- Heat loss: repeated zipping and unzipping slows cooking.
- Cook times: slow-cooker and Dutch oven recipes work well, and conventional oven recipes need double the cooking time or more.
Both ovens are fabric, so both need to come in before rain. Both should wait until they read 180°F before you add food, per Sunflair's instructions. And with both, start meat dishes early in the day and check the internal temperature (165°F for poultry, 160°F for ground meat) in case cloud stalls the cook. Finish on a stove if it does.
Edge: Tie.
Capacity and cookware: the deciding difference
The Mini has one collapsible silicone pot, and Sunflair doesn't publish its capacity. Its trivet takes the place of the Deluxe's rack and tray and, Sunflair says, doubles as a non-stick baking tray for biscuits or cookies. As our estimate, it's a one-pot cooker for one or two people: rice and lentils, a small stew, or a batch of oats.
The Deluxe has a 3 lb round roaster, two collapsible silicone pots, two baking trays and two baking and dehydrating racks. That lets you cook a main and a side at the same time, bake on two levels, or dry fruit and herbs on the racks. Sunflair says it cooks for four to eight.
If you already carry thin, dark pots, check them against each oven's open size before buying. Sunflair's instructions say thin, dark pots absorb heat and cook food best.
Edge: Deluxe, by a wide margin, if you cook for more than two.
Storage and weight in a van
The Mini folds to 2 x 11 x 13 inches, about the size of a 3-ring binder. It fits a seat-back pocket, a door bin or a gap beside the bed. The whole kit is about 2 lb.
The Deluxe folds to 2 x 15.5 x 19 inches, so it needs a gap about the size of a seat cushion. It's still thin enough for under a mattress or behind a seat. The oven is only 1 lb 2 oz, but the full kit is 12 lb, mostly the roaster, trays and racks. Many van cooks would store those with their other cookware rather than in the oven bag.
Set-up space differs too. The Mini opens to 13 x 11 x 5 inches. The Deluxe opens to 24 x 18 x 8 inches and needs a flat spot about 2 feet square. Sunflair's instructions say to set either one up outdoors, on a flat, level spot in full sun. A camp table works for both.
Edge: Mini.
Value
When we checked, the Mini was listed on Amazon for considerably less than the Deluxe. Check current prices on the review pages, since they move. For the extra cost, the Deluxe gives you a much larger oven and a full set of cookware, trays and racks. If you cook for one or two and only want an occasional sunny-day meal with no fuel, most of that extra cost buys capacity you won't use, and the Mini is the better value. If you cook for a family or want to dehydrate, the Deluxe's included cookware saves buying it separately.
Both listings showed limited stock when we checked, and Sunflair's own site showed the Deluxe on backorder and the Mini in stock with backorders possible. Check availability before planning around either.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the Sunflair Mini if:
- You cook for one or two, and a one-pot meal is enough.
- Storage space is the main constraint in your build.
- You want the lightest possible zero-fuel cooker for sunny days.
Buy the Sunflair Deluxe if:
- You cook for three or more, or want a main and a side at once.
- You want to dehydrate fruit or herbs on the included racks.
- You have a cushion-sized gap to store it in.
If you want speed rather than slow cooking, neither suits you. The GoSun Sport is a vacuum-tube cooker rated to 550°F that GoSun says cooks a meal for two in about 20–30 minutes of strong sun. See Sunflair vs GoSun Sport.
FAQ
Do the Mini and Deluxe get equally hot? Sunflair gives the same "up to 285°F" figure for its ovens and says temperature varies with season and location. It doesn't publish separate figures for each size.
Does either work on cloudy days? Only partly. Sunflair says partly cloudy days mean longer cooking times, and full cloud cover makes cooking impossible. That applies to both.
How many people does each cook for? Sunflair says the Deluxe cooks for four to eight. It doesn't publish a figure for the Mini. With one pot, plan on one or two people, by our estimate.
Which is easier to store in a van? The Mini, at 2 x 11 x 13 inches folded and about 2 lb for the kit. The Deluxe folds to 2 x 15.5 x 19 inches, and its kit weighs 12 lb.
Can I dehydrate food in the Mini? Sunflair lists dehydrating racks only in the Deluxe kit. The Mini comes with a trivet and one pot.
