Dometic CFX Series Slide 35/45 Review: The Matched Pull-Out for a CFX5 35

A top-opening 12V fridge under a van counter has an access problem. The lid opens upward, but the counter is in the way, so you either leave a big gap above the fridge or haul the fridge out every time you want milk. A fridge slide solves this. It's a steel tray on locking rails that pulls the fridge out into the aisle, where the lid can open fully, and locks it back in for driving. Our 12V fridge guide calls a slide one of the best-value upgrades in a van kitchen.

The Dometic CFX Series Slide 35/45 (item number 9610000651) is Dometic's own slide for its 35- and 45-litre size class. Dometic lists it as suitable for the CFX5 35, CFX5 45 and legacy CFX3 models of comparable size. On this site, that makes it the matched slide for the Dometic CFX5 35. The Amazon listing we link to is titled for the CFX3 35/45 and carries the same item number, 9610000651.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. The specs come from Dometic's product page and the Amazon listing. The install advice reflects common practice and Dometic's guidance, and it doesn't replace Dometic's manual.

Choose this if:

  • You own or are buying a Dometic CFX5 35 (or CFX5 45, or a legacy CFX3 35/45) and it will live under a counter or in a tall cabinet.
  • You want a slide made for your fridge's footprint, with a latching mechanism and a dust cover.
  • You have solid structure to bolt it to, such as a plywood floor over metal ribs or a framed cabinet base.

Skip this if:

  • You have the Dometic CFX2 45. Dometic's page doesn't list it as compatible.
  • You have an ICECO or BougeRV fridge. Use a slide its own maker lists for your model, or a universal slide with published dimensions that match.
  • Your fridge sits where you can already open the lid fully. A slide adds weight, height and cost you don't need.

What it is

The slide is a low steel platform on two telescoping rails with a lever-operated lock. Dometic's page says it:

  • can be fully extended for access to the fridge contents;
  • has a latching system that "reduces rattling noise while driving";
  • has a dust cover to keep sand and dirt out of the rails;
  • has a maximum load capacity of 220 lb (100 kg);
  • comes with 1 slide, 4 straps, 4 screws and a manual.

The fridge sits on top and is held down by the straps. The slide bolts to the vehicle. When you want access, you release the lever, pull the fridge out into the aisle, and open the lid with nothing above it.

Dometic's page links to a downloadable manual for the CFX3 Cooler Slide models, including CFX3-SLD3545. Read that manual before you drill.

Fit with the CFX5 35

The CFX5 35 review gives the fridge's external dimensions as 27.32 x 15.67 x 16.02 inches (L x W x H, including handles), per Dometic's US documentation. The slide's footprint is 28.93 x 18.94 inches, so it extends a little beyond the fridge on each side, which is where the rails and strap anchors sit.

What that means for your build:

  • Height goes up by 3.35 inches. The fridge top ends up about 19.4 inches above the floor (16.02 plus 3.35). Check that against the underside of your counter, and leave room for the lid to clear the counter edge as it opens once the fridge is pulled out.
  • Ventilation still applies. The CFX5 35 review quotes Dometic's US manual: keep at least 50 mm (about 2 inches) of ventilation clearance on all sides, and don't use the fridge in closed compartments with little or no airflow. A slide doesn't change that. The bay needs to be wider and deeper than the slide by enough to keep those gaps around the fridge, with the vented end clear.
  • Aisle space for extension. When it's extended, the fridge moves out by most of its length. Measure your aisle with the fridge pulled out and the lid open, and make sure you can stand beside it. Our layout planner is useful here.
  • Lid hinge side. The CFX5 35 review notes that Dometic doesn't list the CFX5 35's lid as reversible. Plan the slide direction so the lid opens away from you when the fridge is extended.

The CFX2 45 shares the "45" size class name, but CFX2 is a different Dometic line, and Dometic's slide page lists only CFX5 and comparable CFX3 models. We wouldn't assume it fits. If you have a CFX2 45, ask Dometic directly or use a universal slide whose inner platform dimensions and strap points clearly fit the CFX2 45's published size.

ICECO sells its own slides for its fridges. We looked at the ICECO JP Pro slide, but the Amazon listing's dimensions didn't match ICECO's own page, so we haven't recommended it yet.

Installation

Installation is where a slide succeeds or fails, and it's also where safety comes in. A CFX5 35 weighs 36.5 lb empty per Dometic, so loaded with food and drinks it can easily pass 50 lb, sitting on rails. In a hard stop, everything holding it (the bolts, the floor, the straps and the locked rails) takes many times that weight.

  • Follow Dometic's manual. It specifies mounting and hardware for this slide. Dometic's page lists 4 screws in the box. Whether those suit your floor depends on what's under it.
  • Bolt through to structure. A thin plywood floor over insulation isn't a mounting point by itself. Builders commonly through-bolt to the vehicle floor or ribs, with large washers or a backing plate underneath, or bolt to a framed cabinet base that is itself anchored to the vehicle. Don't rely on wood screws into thin plywood.
  • Check under the floor before drilling. Fuel lines, brake lines, wiring and exhaust run under van floors. Look before you drill.
  • Strap the fridge to the slide. Use the four supplied straps. The slide holds the fridge's base, and the straps keep the fridge on it.
  • Lock it for driving. Always latch the slide closed before moving. An unlatched slide can extend under braking.

Dometic's page doesn't publish a crash-test rating, and we haven't found one. Treat the slide as a well-built mounting platform, not a certified crash restraint. If your conversion has to meet a specific standard, or your insurer asks about it, have a qualified installer check the mounting.

Using it day to day

  • Latch, then open the lid. Get in the habit of checking the lock is engaged before you push the slide home, and that it clicks.
  • Keep the rails clean. The dust cover helps, but grit still gets in. Wipe the rails and check the lock periodically.
  • Load heavy items low. Even on a slide, putting drinks at the bottom of the basket keeps the centre of mass low and reduces load on the rails.
  • Use the top as a surface carefully. The CFX5 35's lid has a non-slip top, but anything on it when you extend the slide will move with it.

Limitations

  • Price. It costs considerably more than universal slides. You're paying for a matched footprint and Dometic's latching and dust cover.
  • Compatibility is narrow. It's listed for CFX5 35/45 and comparable CFX3 models only.
  • Weight and height. It weighs 31.3 lb on its own and adds 3.35 inches of height.
  • No published crash rating. The mounting is your responsibility.
  • Stock. When we checked, the Amazon listing showed in stock but with limited quantity.

Which guides it fits

  • 12V fridge complete guide: "Use a slide" in the installation section, and the advice to secure fridges to solid anchor points.
  • Van kitchen layouts: plan the aisle and counter height around the extended slide.
  • Dometic CFX5 35 review: the fridge this slide is matched to on this site.
  • An AcuRite 00986M works on a fridge on a slide, since its sensors are wireless and nothing trails out when you extend it.

Verdict

The Dometic CFX Series Slide 35/45 is the slide to look at first if you own a CFX5 35 and it lives under a counter. Dometic lists it for the CFX5 35 and 45 and comparable CFX3 models, rates it to 220 lb, and gives it a latching system and a dust cover. It costs considerably more than universal slides, it isn't listed for the CFX2 45, and it's only as safe as the structure you bolt it to. Plan the height, ventilation gaps and aisle space carefully, follow Dometic's manual, and it makes a top-opening fridge much easier to live with.

FAQ

Does the Dometic 9610000651 slide fit the CFX5 35? Yes. Dometic's product page lists it as suitable for the CFX5 35, CFX5 45 and legacy CFX3 models of comparable size.

Does it fit the Dometic CFX2 45? Dometic's page doesn't list the CFX2 45, so we wouldn't assume it fits. Check with Dometic, or use a slide whose published dimensions match the CFX2 45.

How much weight can it hold? Dometic lists a maximum load capacity of 220 lb (100 kg).

How big is it? Dometic lists 18.94 inches wide, 3.35 inches high and 28.93 inches deep, with a net weight of 31.30 lb.

What's in the box? Dometic lists one slide, four straps, four screws and a manual.

Is a fridge slide crash-rated? Dometic doesn't publish a crash-test rating for this slide. Bolt it to solid structure per Dometic's manual, and have a qualified installer check it if your conversion has to meet a standard.

Why is the Amazon listing titled CFX3? The Amazon title reflects the CFX3 range the slide was first sold for. It carries the same item number, 9610000651, as Dometic's current CFX Series Slide 35/45 page, which lists CFX5 35 and 45 compatibility.

Will the fridge still get enough ventilation on a slide? It needs the same clearance as without one. The CFX5 35 review cites Dometic's US manual asking for at least 50 mm (about 2 inches) on all sides, so size the bay to allow that around the fridge.
