GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Review: A Rocking Camp Chair That Folds Flat

Most camp chairs fold into a long round bag. The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker folds flat instead, to a slab 5.5 inches thick, and when it's open it rocks. GCI built it around what it calls Spring-Action Rocking Technology: spring shocks between the seat and the base let the chair rock without curved runners. It has solid armrests, a mesh backrest and a cup holder, and GCI rates it for 250 lb at 11.8 lb.

For a van, the shape is the interesting part. A flat-folding chair can slide into a gap beside a fridge, behind a seat or against a garage wall, where a round chair bag wouldn't fit.

What the Amazon link sells: the listing titled "GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Camping Chair - Black" with part number 37010 (ASIN B087DRTZBF). GCI's own page lists the Black version as 37010. GCI also sells the Freestyle Rocker in Indigo (37060), Cinnamon (37072) and several patterned colours, plus a larger Freestyle Rocker XL; those are separate listings. When we checked, Amazon showed the Black listing in stock.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. The specs come from GCI's product page and the Amazon listing.

Choose this if:

  • You want a chair that moves, for relaxing at camp, and you like the feel of a porch rocker.
  • Your storage space suits a flat item, about 25 by 35 inches and 5.5 inches thick, better than a long bag.
  • You camp on reasonably flat ground: grass, sand, pavement or packed gravel.

Skip this if:

  • You need more than GCI's 250 lb capacity. The ALPS King Kong is rated far higher.
  • You often camp on slopes or rough, rocky ground. GCI describes the rocking action for flat surfaces.
  • You want the smallest or lightest chair. The Helinox Chair One packs to 14 inches long and about 2 lb.

What it is

The Freestyle Rocker is a powder-coated steel frame with a seat, armrests and a nylon mesh backrest. The base sits on the ground like a normal chair, and the seat is connected to the base through spring shocks. When you lean back, the springs compress and the seat tips back; when you lean forward, they push it upright again. That's how it rocks on flat ground without curved rockers that would dig into soft soil.

GCI lists these features:

  • patented Spring-Action Rocking Technology;
  • Eazy-Fold Technology: GCI says you grab the seat frame, push out and down to open, and pull a closure handle up with your foot on the base to fold;
  • padded armrests and a breathable nylon mesh backrest;
  • a powder-coated steel frame;
  • a fold-flat design with a carry handle;
  • a beverage holder.

GCI's page describes "smooth rocking on a range of flat surfaces including grass, sand, and pavement". The Amazon listing says "any surface". GCI's own wording is the narrower one, so plan on flat ground.

Conflicts to know about. GCI gives the folded thickness as 5.5 inches, while the Amazon bullet says 4.9 inches; plan for 5.5. GCI's page shows a 3-year warranty, and the Amazon listing says "limited lifetime"; we'd plan around GCI's 3 years. GCI's page labels the seat height on a diagram but doesn't print the figure as text, so the 19.7-inch seat height comes from the Amazon listing.

How it fits a van or camp kitchen

Storage. Folded, the rocker is 25 by 34.8 inches and 5.5 inches thick, with a carry handle. That's a very different shape from a bag chair. The King Kong packs to 40 x 8 x 9 inches and the NEMO Stargaze EVO-X to 40 x 10.5 x 8.5 inches. The rocker is shorter, but wider and taller. Good places for it in a van are:

  • standing on edge between a fridge cabinet and the wall;
  • flat on the floor of a garage under a bed platform with at least 6 inches of clearance;
  • strapped behind the driver's or passenger's seat, if there's a 35-inch-tall gap.

Strap or wedge it so the steel frame can't rattle against cabinets on rough roads. The rattle guide covers ways to do this. For a wider look at where camp-only gear can go, see the storage guide.

Height and tables. At a 19.7-inch seat height (Amazon), the rocker sits a little higher than the King Kong's 19 inches. That pairs well with a dining-height table around 28 inches, such as the Mountain Summit Gear roll-top or the Front Runner Pro Stainless Steel Camp Table. You can eat at a table in it, but the rocking motion means it shifts as you reach forward, so it's more relaxed than a fixed chair for meals.

Ground. GCI describes the rocking for flat surfaces including grass, sand and pavement. On a slope, the chair will tip toward the low side as it rocks. On loose sand the base can sink unevenly. Choose the flattest patch you can, or set the chair on a board.

Comfort, capacity and safety

The rocker's 250 lb capacity is the lowest of the chairs on this site. The Helinox chairs are rated at 320 lb and the ALPS King Kong at 800 lb by their makers. If you're near that figure, a higher-rated chair is the safer choice. A rocking seat also puts more dynamic load through its springs and pivots than a still chair, so don't let children bounce in it or stand on it.

Keep it back from the stove and any campfire. The mesh backrest isn't described as fire-resistant, and you'll be rocking toward whatever's in front of you. Fuel-burning stoves should be used outdoors where their manuals say so, with chairs kept clear. The van cooking safety guide covers clearances.

Care

Wipe the frame down after wet or sandy trips, paying attention to the spring shocks and the folding joints, where grit collects. Look for chips in the powder coat, since steel rusts where it's exposed. Let the mesh dry before you store the chair. If the folding action gets stiff, clean the moving joints and follow GCI's guidance in the product's paperwork rather than forcing it.

Limitations

  • 250 lb capacity, the lowest of the chairs on this site.
  • Flat ground preferred, per GCI's own wording.
  • Folded shape is wide and tall, 25 by 34.8 inches, which doesn't suit every van.
  • 11.8 lb is heavier than pole chairs, though lighter than the King Kong or the NEMO.
  • Warranty wording differs between GCI (3 years) and the Amazon listing (limited lifetime).

How it compares

  • ALPS King Kong: a fixed four-leg chair with a 19-inch seat, 800 lb ALPS figure and 13 lb weight, packed in a 40-inch bag. Better for heavier sitters and uneven ground; the rocker stores flatter and moves. See Helinox Chair One vs ALPS King Kong.
  • NEMO Stargaze EVO-X: the other motion chair here. It swings and reclines deeply with a padded headrest, has a 300 lb NEMO figure, weighs about 13.75 lb and packs into a 40-inch bag. Choose the NEMO for lying back, and the GCI for an upright rocking seat that folds flat and costs less.
  • Helinox Chair One and Helinox Sunset: pole chairs that pack far smaller and lighter, but don't rock and take a minute to assemble.

For planning how seating and tables fit around the van, see the van kitchen layouts guide.

Verdict

The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker is a good choice if you want a camp chair that rocks and a flat shape that stores in a gap rather than a long bag. GCI's figures back up its main points: Spring-Action rocking, a 5.5-inch folded thickness, 11.8 lb, a steel frame and a 3-year warranty. The limits come from the same page: a 250 lb capacity and rocking described for flat surfaces. If you're near that capacity or camp on rough slopes, a fixed chair like the King Kong is the safer pick. If you camp on level sites and like to rock, this is a comfortable, easy-to-store option.
