Overview: who is this for?

The ICECO GO20 is a 20-litre (21-quart) compressor fridge-freezer with a removable divider that splits it into two zones, each with its own temperature setting. It uses a Secop compressor and has Bluetooth app control. That combination, dual-zone cooling in a compact box from an established 12 V fridge brand, is unusual at this size. Most dual-zone fridges are 50 litres or more.

What the Amazon link sells: the listing this page links to is "ICECO GO20 21 Quart/20 Liter Dual Zone 12 Volt Refrigerator, Portable Refrigerator with Secop Compressor", part number GO20WDS, in white. ICECO sells the same fridge in gray (GO20GDS) and in bundles with a battery or cover under other listings. The fridge itself is the same.

Choose this if:

  • You want a small fridge that can also freeze, at the same time, in a separate section.
  • Your vehicle has room for a 22.4 x 12.6-inch box, such as a car, small SUV, truck cab or micro-camper.
  • You want a Secop compressor and an app at a mid-range price.

Skip this if:

  • You need more than 20 litres total. Once divided, each zone is small.
  • You want the lowest power use for the size. ICECO's published figure for the GO20 is the same order as its 35-litre fridges.
  • You want a single big open space. A single-zone fridge like the Dometic CFX5 25 is roomier.

This is a research-based review. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specifications come from ICECO's GO20 manual (version 5.0), ICECO's GO20 product page and the Amazon listing. Day-to-day behaviour comes from owner reports and is labelled that way.

Capacity, dimensions and clearance

Interior capacity. ICECO's manual lists 21.0 quarts (20.0 litres) in total. ICECO doesn't publish the volume of each zone. With the divider removed, it works as a single-zone fridge with one temperature setting, per the manual.

External dimensions. ICECO's manual gives 22.4 x 12.6 x 12.4 inches (569 x 320 x 315 mm, L x W x H). The empty weight is 27.5 lb (12.5 kg). At 12.4 inches tall, it fits under many seats and low shelves where 16-inch fridges don't.

Ventilation clearance. ICECO's manual asks for more than 5 cm (about 2 inches) on the left and right sides and 10 cm (about 4 inches) at the front air outlet, as the fix for its E4 and E5 compressor-protection error codes. It also says the compressor can fail at ambient temperatures above 55°C (131°F). With clearance, plan on roughly 26.4 x 16.6 inches of floor space.

Construction. ICECO's manual lists an ABS shell with C-pentane foam insulation. That's lighter than the steel cabinets of ICECO's VL ProS models, which is how the GO20 comes in at 27.5 lb.

Wheels. None. ICECO sells an insulated protective cover separately.

How the dual zones work

ICECO's manual describes a detachable partition that creates two separate zones, controlled from two digital panels at the same time. Each zone has its own temperature setting across ICECO's 0°F to 50°F (-18°C to +10°C) range, so one side can be a fridge and the other a freezer.

Remove the partition and it becomes a single-zone fridge with one temperature setting. That flexibility is the GO20's main selling point: a freezer section when you need ice packs or frozen meat for the first days of a trip, and the full box as a fridge for the rest.

There's a fast-cooling mode. ICECO's manual says that in fast mode, the left bin receives all of the fridge's cooling power for the first 15 minutes while the right bin holds its current temperature. Then, back in normal mode, the right bin returns to its set temperature. ICECO's product page says the fridge draws 45 W at full output in MAX mode, and that ECO mode slows the compressor to save energy.

One compressor serves both zones, so the freezer side is the one that drives most of the run time. With both zones in use, expect the compressor to run more than it does with the whole box as a fridge.

Power consumption

Keep the rating and the daily figure separate.

  • Published power rating: 45 W at full output in MAX mode (ICECO product page). That's the running maximum, not an average.
  • Published daily energy: ICECO's GO20 manual lists 0.433 kWh per 24 hours, and its catalog page in the same manual gives the same figure. ICECO says this "is only suitable for laboratory testing" and that actual consumption depends on conditions. It doesn't state the ambient temperature, the setpoints, or whether one or both zones were running.

At 12 V nominal, 433 Wh is about 36 Ah per day, an average of roughly 1.5 A.

ConditionsWh/dayAh/day at 12 VSource
ICECO lab figure~433~36ICECO manual
Mild weather, single zone as a fridge~340~28Our estimate
Hot van, freezer side near 0°F~650~54Our estimate

The mild and hot rows are our estimates. That lab figure is close to ICECO's 0.430 kWh for the 35-litre VL35 ProS, which is a reminder that a small, light box with foam insulation isn't automatically frugal. Freezing in one zone costs energy too.

Battery protection

ICECO's manual lists the same three-level battery protection as its larger fridges, at 12 V, shown as cut-off / restart:

  • Low: 9.6 V / 10.9 V
  • Medium: 10.4 V / 11.7 V
  • High: 11.1 V / 12.4 V

You set it from standby, using the buttons on the right-zone display, as the manual describes. Use High on a starting battery; on a lithium house bank, use the lowest level your battery maker allows.

Battery sizing

  • 50 Ah lithium or a small power station: about a day of fridge-only use in warm weather, by our estimate. ICECO sells the GO20 in bundles with its own batteries.
  • 100 Ah lithium with 100–200 W of solar: comfortable for weekends and longer trips in most weather.

Run your own numbers in the fridge battery calculator.

Power and controls

The GO20 runs on 12/24 V DC through a cigarette-lighter plug cable. For AC, ICECO supplies an 80 W universal AC adapter, an external power brick, rather than building the AC supply in like its larger fridges. The manual says the unit can be used on 100–240 V when connected through that adapter.

Controls are two digital panels, one per zone, plus a fast-cooling button and a lock. The panel locks itself after 90 seconds without input to prevent accidental changes. The ICECO app connects over Bluetooth and lets you set and monitor the temperatures from your phone, per the manual's app section.

ICECO's manual gives a 5-year warranty on the compressor and 1 year on other parts and accessories. ICECO also notes that the GO20 has won Red Dot and IDEA design awards and carries an ETL certificate.

How it fits a van kitchen

The GO20 fits three kinds of build:

  1. Small vehicles. Cars, SUVs and pickup cabs, where a 12.4-inch-tall fridge fits places taller ones don't.
  2. Weekend trips that start with frozen food. Freeze in one zone for the first days, then remove the divider.
  3. A second fridge or freezer in a larger van, for drinks or frozen goods, next to a main fridge.

It's less suited to full-time van life for two. Twenty litres split into two zones is small, and the energy figure isn't much lower than a 35-litre fridge's. For a couple, the ICECO VL35 ProS or the ICECO VL60 Dual Zone are better matches. Our what size 12V fridge guide has worked examples.

The Dometic CFX5 25 has more space, Dometic's colour display and a published energy figure with stated conditions. The Alpicool C20 is the budget option, with no published wattage. The GO20 is the one with two zones and a named compressor.

Limitations

  • Small zones. ICECO doesn't publish their sizes, and each is a fraction of 20 litres.
  • Lab energy figure without conditions, close to that of ICECO's 35-litre fridges.
  • External AC adapter to carry and keep track of.
  • Plastic shell, not ICECO's steel cabinet.
  • 1-year warranty on everything except the compressor.

Verdict

The ICECO GO20 is one of very few compact fridges that can freeze and refrigerate at the same time, and it does it with a Secop compressor, app control and a 27.5 lb weight. Its limits are space and a published energy figure no lower than larger fridges'. For small vehicles, weekend trips or a second fridge, it's a well-thought-out choice. For two people living in a van, buy more litres.
