YETI Roadie 48 Wheeled Cooler Review: A Hard Cooler You Can Roll to the Table

A loaded hard cooler is one of the heaviest things in a camp kitchen. A 45-quart box full of ice and food can weigh well over 70 lb, which is fine if it never leaves the van floor, and a real problem if you carry it from the parking spot to a walk-in site, a beach or a picnic shelter. The YETI Roadie 48 Wheeled Cooler is YETI's answer for that job: a rotomolded hard cooler with solid wheels, a retractable handle and a tall interior. It's the first wheeled cooler on this site.

What the Amazon link sells: "YETI Roadie 48 Wheeled Cooler with Retractable Periscope Handle, White", YETI part number 10048020000 (ASIN B0B7NW1B1B). Other colours are separate listings with the same body. YETI says it comes with one dry goods basket. When we checked, Amazon showed the listing in stock.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. The specs come from YETI's product page for this part number and from the Amazon listing. Where the two disagree, we say so.

Choose this if:

  • You regularly move a loaded cooler away from the vehicle: walk-in campsites, beaches, tailgates, group picnics.
  • You want to stand wine bottles, 2-liter bottles or tall containers upright. YETI says it fits most of them.
  • You car-camp with a family or group and want one cooler for food and drinks, with dry-ice compatibility for longer trips.

Skip this if:

  • The cooler will live on a van floor or slide and never travel. The YETI Tundra 45 or Engel 35 has a lower, more stackable shape, and the Tundra is bear-certified when padlocked.
  • Overall height is tight. At 20.6 inches tall plus lid swing, it won't fit under many bed platforms or behind front seats.
  • You want the most space per pound. The RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light holds the same 76 cans at 21 lb.

What it is

The Roadie 48 is a hard-sided passive cooler. YETI describes a rotomolded shell, PermaFrost pressure-injected polyurethane insulation, an Interlock lid system and a ColdLock gasket. It has no compressor and draws no power. It keeps food cold for as long as the ice lasts.

What sets it apart from the site's other hard coolers is how it moves. YETI lists NeverFlat wheels, which it describes as solid, single-piece tyres that resist punctures, and a Periscope handle that retracts into the body when you aren't towing it. There are also LipGrip side handles for a two-person lift, BearFoot non-slip feet, AnchorPoint tie-down slots, QuickLatch one-handed latches and a BestDam drain plug.

Weight conflict. YETI's page lists 28.30 lb. The Amazon listing for the White version gives about 22 lb, and other colours' listings give about 25.8 lb. We use YETI's figure, which is the manufacturer's spec and the most conservative one for planning.

Volume. YETI doesn't publish a volume in quarts on this page. Its interior dimensions multiply out to about 2,612 cubic inches, or about 45 quarts of box volume (14.5 × 11.4 × 15.8 ÷ 57.75). That's before the basket and the curve of the walls. Treat "48" as a model name, and use the can and ice counts to compare.

No ice-retention figure. YETI publishes no days-of-ice figure for the Roadie 48. Its page says it has the same cold-holding power as a Tundra cooler, but gives no test conditions. Ice life depends on how much ice you pack, how warm the food is when it goes in, the outside temperature, sun exposure and how often you open it.

No bear certification listed. The Tundra 45's YETI page lists IGBC approval with padlocks. The Roadie 48 page we opened lists no bear-resistance certification, so don't count on it in areas that require a certified container.

How it fits a van or camp kitchen

Its shape is tall and square. The Roadie's footprint is roughly 20 by 20 inches, close to square, and it stands 20.6 inches tall. A Tundra 45 is longer and lower (25.6 x 15.9 x 15.5 in, per YETI). On a van floor or under a counter, the Roadie takes less length but more height. Measure the clearance to anything above it and add room for the lid to open. In a car, the square footprint often fits a hatchback floor or the footwell of a rear seat better than a long, low box.

The interior height is the point. At 15.8 inches deep inside, it holds upright bottles and tall containers that would have to lie down in a low cooler. That keeps lids on leftovers and stops bottles rolling around while you drive.

Wheels change who can move it. Empty, it's 28.3 lb. Add its rated 54 lb of ice and it's over 80 lb, before any food. On the wheels, one person can tow that across a car park or a gravel path. On stairs, sand or rough ground, plan on two people using the side handles. Don't lift a loaded cooler in or out of a high van floor on your own.

Tie it down. YETI's AnchorPoint slots make it easier to strap to a truck bed, trailer or van tie-down. A heavy cooler in a sudden stop is a hazard, so strap it in rather than relying on the non-slip feet.

It pairs with a fridge. If your van already has a 12 V fridge, the Roadie works as the overflow and drinks cooler that comes out at camp. Keeping drinks in a separate cooler means the food cooler gets opened less often, which helps it stay cold.

Food safety with a cooler

Ice in a passive cooler doesn't hold a set temperature the way a compressor fridge does. Iowa State University Extension's camping food safety advice is to keep raw meat, dairy, eggs, leafy greens and cut melon at 40°F or below. It warns that bacteria multiply rapidly between 40°F and 140°F, and says perishables shouldn't be out of refrigeration for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.

Practical habits that follow from that:

  • Pre-chill the cooler and the food before you pack it.
  • Pack raw meat at the bottom, sealed, with ready-to-eat food above it, as Iowa State suggests when you can't use separate coolers.
  • Keep a cheap fridge thermometer inside so you know when the cooler has warmed past 40°F. The site reviews the AcuRite 00986M for this.
  • Drain meltwater with the BestDam plug, but keep enough ice that food is still surrounded by cold.
  • Keep it in shade. A white cooler in the sun still gains heat, just more slowly than a dark one.

Dry ice. YETI says the Roadie 48 is dry-ice compatible, because its gasket lets carbon dioxide escape. Don't carry dry ice in a closed vehicle cabin without ventilation. Carbon dioxide gas from dry ice can build up in an enclosed space. Ventilate the vehicle, keep dry ice out of the sleeping area, and handle it with gloves.

Leak-resistant, not leakproof. YETI says its hard coolers need to release pressure to be dry-ice compatible, so they're leak-resistant rather than 100% leakproof. Keep it upright in the vehicle and sit it on a mat or tray if meltwater on the floor would be a problem.

Cleaning and care

YETI recommends soap and warm water, and for heavy-duty cleaning, a 6:1 solution of warm water and bleach with a sponge or mildly abrasive rag. Dry it with the lid open before storing it, so it doesn't trap moisture and smell. YETI sells replacement parts for the Roadie 48 and 60, plus a divider, a cup caddy and extra dry goods baskets. If you clean it at camp with limited water, the van kitchen dishwashing guide covers greywater handling.

Limitations

  • Heavy and tall. 28.3 lb empty (YETI) and 20.6 inches tall.
  • No published ice-retention figure, and no test conditions behind the "Tundra-level" claim.
  • No bear certification listed for the Roadie 48.
  • Wheels need firm ground. Solid tyres roll well on pavement and packed gravel. Sand and deep mud still mean carrying it.
  • Leak-resistant, not leakproof.
  • Weight figures disagree between YETI and the Amazon listings.

How it compares

  • YETI Tundra 45: no wheels, lower and longer, IGBC approved with padlocks, and YETI's capacity is 54 cans or 37 lb of ice. The Roadie holds more cans and stands bottles upright. The Tundra suits a fixed spot on a van floor and bear country. See YETI Tundra 45 vs RTIC 52 Ultra-Light for how the Tundra compares on space.
  • RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light: the same 76-can count at 21 lb, injection-moulded, no wheels on the version we link, and with an ice claim RTIC ties to published conditions.
  • YETI Hopper M20 Backpack: a soft backpack cooler for carrying lunch and drinks hands-free, where wheels won't go.
  • A 12 V fridge: if you're choosing between ice and electric, read the 12V fridge guide and YETI Tundra 45 vs ICECO VL35.

Verdict

The YETI Roadie 48 suits car campers and groups who move a loaded cooler away from the vehicle, and anyone who wants bottles and tall containers to stand upright. Its documented features support that: solid wheels and a retractable handle, a 15.8-inch interior height, 76 cans or 54 lb of ice, dry-ice compatibility, tie-down slots and a 5-year warranty. If the cooler never leaves the van, its height and 28.3 lb empty weight count against it. A lower, non-wheeled box or a 12 V fridge uses the space better.

FAQ

How much does the YETI Roadie 48 hold? YETI rates it at 76 cans with no ice, or 54 lb of ice with nothing else. Its interior is 14.5 by 11.4 by 15.8 inches, about 45 quarts of box volume by our arithmetic.

How heavy is it? YETI lists 28.30 lb empty. Amazon listings give lower figures (about 22 to 25.8 lb, depending on colour). Full of ice, it can weigh over 80 lb.

Will wine bottles stand up inside? YETI says it fits most standard wine bottles and 2-liter soda bottles upright.

How long does ice last in the Roadie 48? YETI doesn't publish an ice-retention figure for it. Ice life depends on how much ice you use, pre-chilling, outside temperature, sun and how often you open it. A thermometer inside the cooler is the reliable way to know your food is at 40°F or below.

Is it bear-resistant? The YETI product page we opened lists no bear-resistance certification for the Roadie 48. The YETI Tundra 45 is IGBC approved when used with padlocks.

Can I use dry ice in it? YETI says yes, because the gasket lets carbon dioxide escape. Ventilate the vehicle when you carry dry ice, keep it out of the sleeping area, and handle it with gloves.

Is it leakproof? YETI describes its hard coolers as leak-resistant, not 100% leakproof, because they release pressure for dry-ice use.
