Overview: who is the Dometic Patrol 55 for?

The Dometic Patrol 55 is a one-piece rotomolded polyethylene ice chest with thick polyurethane insulation, a deep-freeze lid seal, one-handed rubber latches and a large drain. It holds 54 liters, or 43 cans by Dometic's count. It's a passive cooler: no compressor and no battery draw. It comes from the same company that makes the CFX fridges many van builders end up buying, which is part of why it's here. If you're weighing a 55-liter compressor fridge against a cooler of similar size, this is the like-for-like passive alternative.

What the Amazon link sells: "Dometic Patrol 55L Insulated Hard Cooler, Mist, Ice Chest and Passive Cool Box, Fits 43 Cans", ASIN B0967VQPP1, Dometic part and model number 9600028786. That's the Patrol 55 in Mist (a light grey). Dometic sells Ocean and Slate as separate listings, plus the smaller Patrol 20.

The Patrol 55 sits between the 52-quart RTIC Ultra-Light and the 70-quart Pelican Elite 70QT in size. Its main distinction from the RTIC is construction: rotomolded and heavier against injection molded and lighter. Its main distinction from the Pelican is shape: lower and shorter, so it fits under more counters and bed platforms.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from Dometic's US product page for the Patrol 55 and the Amazon listing we link to. Where Dometic doesn't publish a figure, we say so. See how we research.

Choose this if:

  • You want a rotomolded cooler of about 55 liters that's only 16.4 inches tall.
  • You're comparing a cooler to a 55-liter 12V fridge and want a box with a similar footprint.
  • You like one-handed rubber latches, which are easier to work with a bag of groceries in the other hand.
  • You want an included basket. Dometic lists one in the box.

Skip this if:

  • You want the lightest cooler for its size. At 33.08 pounds empty, the Patrol weighs about 12 pounds more than the RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light.
  • You need a published ice-retention figure. Dometic says "for days" without a number.
  • You need a bear-resistant certification. Dometic's US page doesn't list one. The YETI Tundra 45 and Engel ENG35 are certified.

Dometic's US page gives the metric dimensions as 47.8 x 75.7 x 41.6 cm. It lists a "deep-freeze lid seal" that "ensures no gaps for air to enter or escape", one-handed rubber latches and a "large, leak-proof drain". The Amazon listing adds a dock on the cooler body for optional accessories, which it names as cup holders, a bottle opener and a fishing rod holder.

What Dometic doesn't publish. The US page has no interior dimensions, no insulation thickness, no ice-retention figure and no bear certification. Plan by the 54-liter volume and the exterior size. The Amazon listing's own dimension fields don't line up with Dometic's: they put the 29.8-inch figure as the height. That's a data error on the listing; Dometic's page makes clear 29.8 inches is the width.

Warranty wording. Dometic's US page says 3 years. Some retailers advertise a longer limited warranty. Go by the US page and confirm the terms on your receipt.

Ice retention: what Dometic says

Dometic says the Patrol's "thick PU insulation is designed to keep ice frozen for days". There's no number of days and no stated conditions, so there's nothing precise to plan around. We don't run ice tests and won't guess one.

In general, a rotomolded cooler of this size with a gasketed lid holds ice for several days in moderate weather when you pre-chill it, pack it with plenty of ice, keep it in shade and limit lid openings. Expect less in a hot van that's opened often. Two habits matter most:

  • Pre-chill. Load the cooler with a sacrificial bag of ice the night before, or keep it somewhere cool. Warm walls melt the first load of ice fast.
  • Pack at about 2:1 ice to food, with block ice or frozen water jugs low and cubes on top. A full cooler holds temperature better than a half-empty one.

A separate drinks cooler helps more than people expect. Every time someone opens the main box for a can, cold air spills out. A soft cooler like the YETI Hopper M30 or Engel HD30 takes that job.

How it fits a van or car camping kitchen

Footprint and height. At 29.8 by 18.8 inches on the floor, the Patrol takes about the same floor space as the Dometic CFX5 55IM 12V fridge (28.35 by 17.91 inches), but it's 16.4 inches tall against the fridge's 18.9. That 2.5-inch difference is the gap between fitting under a bed platform or a slide-out and not fitting. Allow extra height above the lid to open it, or a slide that pulls it out.

Compared with other coolers on this site, it's about 4.2 inches longer and 2.9 inches deeper than the YETI Tundra 45 (25.6 by 15.9 inches), and about 2.6 inches longer and 1.3 inches deeper than the RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light, while nearly an inch lower than the RTIC.

Weight. 33.08 pounds empty. Add about 2:1 ice and food for a long weekend and you're looking at roughly 75 to 90 pounds by our estimate, depending on how full you pack it. That's a two-person lift. Plan to load it where it rides.

Securing it. Dometic's US page doesn't describe tie-down points. Use ratchet straps over the lid and around the body to rated floor anchors, and check that the strap doesn't press on a latch. Our rattle-proofing guide covers keeping heavy items from shifting.

Drain. Point the drain end toward a door so you can let meltwater out without moving the cooler.

Patrol 55 vs a 55-liter 12V fridge

The Patrol's closest relatives are Dometic's own fridges, so the decision is often "this, or a CFX".

What the Patrol saves you: a battery bank, a charger or solar, wiring and fusing, and the ventilation clearance a compressor fridge needs. It also has no failure points beyond a gasket, latches and a drain. For weekend use, or in a vehicle without a house battery, it's the simpler setup.

What a fridge saves you: ice runs, meltwater and the third of the box that ice takes up. A 55-liter fridge holds 55 liters of food. A 55-liter cooler packed at 2:1 holds about a third of that in food. For anyone on the road more than a few days at a time, that difference adds up quickly. A fridge also holds a set temperature, while a cooler warms slowly as the ice melts.

Our 12V fridge guide and what size fridge guide cover the fridge side. The YETI Tundra 45 vs ICECO VL35 comparison runs through the cooler-or-fridge decision in detail at a smaller size.

Food safety

A cooler keeps food safe only while it stays cold. Iowa State University Extension's camping food safety guidance says raw meat, dairy, eggs, leafy greens and cut melon must stay at 40°F or below, that perishables shouldn't be out of refrigeration for more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), and that raw meat should go in its own cooler or at the bottom.

Put a thermometer in the cooler; the AcuRite fridge and freezer thermometer lets you read it without opening the lid. Double-bag raw meat and use the included basket to keep dry food out of meltwater. In summer heat, read our summer van kitchen guide for ways to keep the cooler out of the hottest part of the van.

Dry ice

Dometic's US page doesn't say whether the Patrol is rated for dry ice, so check with Dometic before using it. In any vehicle, dry ice turns into carbon dioxide gas as it warms. Don't carry it in a closed van or car, don't sleep in a vehicle with it, and ventilate well while driving.

Limitations

  • No ice-retention number. "For days" isn't something you can plan a trip around.
  • No published interior dimensions or wall thickness.
  • Heavy for its size compared with injection-molded coolers.
  • No bear certification on the US page.
  • 3-year warranty, shorter than the YETI's 5, the Engel's 10 or the Pelican's lifetime guarantee.
  • The listing's dimension fields are wrong. Use Dometic's figures.

How it compares

  • RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light: similar capacity, about 12 pounds lighter, a 7-day ice claim under RTIC's stated cooling tips, and it costs less. The Patrol is rotomolded, lower and comes with a basket.
  • YETI Tundra 45: smaller, IGBC bear-certified with padlocks, 5-year warranty.
  • Pelican Elite 70QT: bigger, longer and taller, with a lifetime guarantee.
  • Dometic CFX5 55IM: a 55-liter compressor fridge with an ice maker. Similar floor space, no ice runs, but it needs a battery system and costs considerably more.

Value

The Patrol 55 is a premium cooler. What it buys over the RTIC is rotomolded construction, a lower box and an included basket. What it gives up is weight, an ice claim and two years of warranty against the YETI. Buy it if its 16.4-inch height solves a fit problem in your rig, or if you want a rotomolded box in this size. Check current pricing on Amazon, since it changes often.

Final verdict

The Dometic Patrol 55 is a solid, low-profile rotomolded cooler with a useful 54-liter capacity. Its best case is a van or SUV where a 55-liter box has to slide under something, and its natural rival is a Dometic fridge in the same footprint. Dometic publishes less about it than we'd like, with no ice figure, interior dimensions or wall thickness, so buy it for its size, construction and latches, and plan conservatively on ice.
