Overview: who it's for

The Zojirushi NHS-06 is the smallest model in Zojirushi's basic Rice Cooker/Steamer line. It has one switch, a nonstick inner pan, a see-through glass lid and stay-cool handles. There's no timer, no menu and no fuzzy-logic programming. You add rice and water, press the switch down, and it cooks until the water is absorbed, then switches itself off.

For a van, the number that matters is the electrical rating. Zojirushi lists the NHS-06 at 120 volts / 300 watts. That's low for a cooking appliance. It's about a sixth of an 1,800 W induction cooktop and well within what a small inverter or a 500 W portable power station can supply. It's one of the few electric cookers that makes sense in a van without a large battery and inverter system.

What the Amazon link sells: the Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer in white, model NHS-06. The listing is titled "Zojirushi 3 Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer (White)."

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from Zojirushi's product page for the NHS-06/10/18 series and from the Amazon listing we link to. Energy figures are our estimates, and we show the assumptions.

Choose this if:

  • You eat rice often and want it cooked hands-off while you prep other food.
  • Your van has a modest inverter or a power station rated at least 500 W continuous.
  • You'd rather save gas for other cooking, or you're parked where open flames aren't allowed.

Skip this if:

  • You want rice kept warm for hours. Zojirushi says keep-warm is only on the larger NHS-10 and NHS-18, not the NHS-06.
  • You have no inverter or AC outlet. It's a 120 V appliance.
  • Your kitchen already runs on induction. A pot of rice on an induction plate does the same job without another appliance.

What it is and what it isn't

Zojirushi's description of the series is: "Cook white or brown rice with the classic Rice Cooker/Steamer. It features an easy-to-use single switch control, a see-through glass lid, and stay cool handles." The important line follows: "Stainless steel steaming basket and automatic keep warm function available on NHS-10 (6 cups) and NHS-18 (10 cups) models."

So the NHS-06 is a cook-and-stop rice cooker. It doesn't hold rice warm after it finishes, and it doesn't come with the steaming basket. You can still steam vegetables on top of rice in the same pot, as people do in any pot, but there's no dedicated basket.

Zojirushi lists accessories for the series as a rice measuring cup, a nonstick rice spatula and the steaming basket (NHS-10/18 only).

How "3 cups" is measured. Zojirushi says capacity is measured in its own measuring cup, about 6.1 fl oz (180 ml), using raw short-grain white rice. That's smaller than a US cup (8 fl oz). The listing adds that one 6 oz cup of raw rice makes about 2 to 3 of those cups cooked. So the NHS-06 cooks up to 3 small cups raw, enough for about 6 to 9 small cups of cooked rice by the listing's figure. In practice, that's rice for two to four people.

Power: what it takes to run it in a van

Here's the honest analysis. These figures are estimates. Zojirushi publishes the 300 W rating but not cook times or energy per cook.

Nameplate vs actual use. A simple rice cooker like this one has a heating element and a thermostat. While there's free water in the pan, the element runs at full power and the pan stays near boiling. When the water is absorbed and the pan temperature rises, the thermostat flips the switch off. So the cooker draws close to its full 300 W rating for the cook and then stops. It isn't a constant load for hours.

Energy per cook (estimate). If the element runs at about 300 W for 15 to 25 minutes, depending on how much rice and water you cook, that's about 75 to 125 Wh at the outlet. Run through an inverter at about 90% efficiency, the battery supplies roughly 80 to 140 Wh per cook. At 12.8 V nominal, that's about 6.5 to 11 Ah. A larger batch of brown rice sits at the top of that range. These are our assumptions, not Zojirushi's figures.

Inverter sizing. A resistive heating load like this has no large start-up surge. The battery-side draw at 300 W is about 330 W, or roughly 26 A at 12.8 V. A pure sine wave inverter rated 500 W or more continuous gives comfortable headroom. Zojirushi doesn't publish inverter guidance for this model, so a pure sine inverter is the safe choice. Some heating appliances tolerate modified sine output, but we don't recommend relying on it.

Power stations. The Jackery Explorer 500 v2 is rated 500 W AC, which covers the NHS-06's 300 W. With 512 Wh of capacity, it could manage several cooks between charges by our estimate, alongside light loads. The 1 kWh stations on this site, such as the EcoFlow DELTA 3, handle it easily. Neither of these covers a fridge as well for days without recharging, so add up your whole day. The power calculator and our van kitchen power budget guide walk through it.

Installed systems. If you're adding an inverter to a van's house battery to run appliances like this, follow the inverter and battery makers' installation instructions on wire size and fusing. Use a qualified RV or marine electrical technician where codes, your insurer or a warranty require it.

How it fits a van kitchen

Footprint. At about 9 x 7.5 x 7.5 inches, it's roughly the size of a small saucepan with a lid. It fits on most van counters for the 20 or so minutes it's working and in a lower cabinet the rest of the time.

Steam. A rice cooker vents steam through the lid. In a van, that's moisture you want out of the cabin, not on your ceiling. Run it under an open roof fan or near an open window. This is general cooking ventilation for steam, not combustion ventilation, because nothing is burning. Our van kitchen ventilation guide covers moisture and condensation.

Securing it while driving. The glass lid is the fragile part. Don't leave the cooker on the counter while you drive. Pack it in a cabinet with a towel around the lid, or store the lid separately wrapped in a cloth.

No keep-warm. Because the NHS-06 switches off when done, rice cools if you leave it. That's fine if you eat soon after. If you cook rice ahead, cool it quickly and refrigerate it. Cooked rice left warm for a long time is a known food-safety risk. In a van, that means getting leftovers into the fridge promptly.

Instead of gas. Every fuel-burning stove on this site is labelled by its maker for outdoor use. If you'd rather cook inside on bad-weather days, an electric cooker on a properly sized inverter is one of the options. Our cooktops guide compares induction, butane and propane.

Cleaning

The inner pan is nonstick, which helps with limited water. Let it soak with a little water while you eat, then wipe it with a soft sponge. Use the plastic spatula, not metal utensils, to avoid scratching the coating. The glass lid washes like any glass lid. Wipe the heating plate under the pan if rice water boils over onto it, and only once the cooker is unplugged and cool.

Limitations

  • No keep-warm and no steaming basket on the NHS-06, per Zojirushi.
  • 120 V only. You need an inverter or AC outlet.
  • Fragile glass lid for a moving vehicle.
  • No timer or programs. It's a simple on-off cooker.
  • Steam to manage in a small space.
  • Another appliance to store, if you already cook rice in a pot.

Alternatives on this site

  • Induction plus a pot. If you already have the Duxtop induction cooktop and the big inverter it needs, a pot of rice works fine. The rice cooker's advantage is that it's hands-off and draws far less power.
  • Omnia Stovetop Oven (review): for baking rather than rice, on a burner rather than an outlet.
  • Instant Vortex Mini 2 qt (review): an air fryer for crisping. At 1,300 W, it needs a much larger inverter than this rice cooker.

Verdict

The Zojirushi NHS-06 is a basic rice cooker with one standout number for van life: 300 W. That's low enough for a 500 W pure sine inverter or a small power station, and by our estimate a cook costs about 80 to 140 Wh from the battery. It's simple, compact and easy to clean. Its limits are just as clear: no keep-warm, no steaming basket, a glass lid to pack carefully, and a 120 V plug. If you eat rice several times a week and have a modest inverter, it takes a job off your stove. If you already cook on induction, you may not need it.

FAQ

How many watts is the Zojirushi NHS-06? Zojirushi lists it at 120 volts / 300 watts.

What size inverter do I need for a Zojirushi 3-cup rice cooker? At 300 W, a pure sine wave inverter rated 500 W or more continuous gives comfortable headroom. A power station with at least 500 W of AC output, such as the Jackery Explorer 500 v2, also covers it.

How much battery does one rice cook use? By our estimate, about 80 to 140 Wh from the battery per cook, or about 6.5 to 11 Ah at 12.8 V. That assumes 15 to 25 minutes at full power and 90% inverter efficiency.

Does the Zojirushi NHS-06 keep rice warm? No. Zojirushi says the automatic keep-warm function is only on the NHS-10 and NHS-18 models.

How much rice does the 3-cup Zojirushi make? Up to 3 Zojirushi cups of raw rice (each about 180 ml, smaller than a US cup). The listing says each raw cup makes about 2 to 3 cups cooked, so about 6 to 9 small cups of cooked rice.

Can I run it on a 12V outlet? Not directly. It's a 120 V AC appliance. You need an inverter or a power station with an AC outlet.

Does it come with a steaming basket? No. Zojirushi says the stainless steaming basket comes with the NHS-10 and NHS-18 only.
