Overview: who is the Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 for?
The Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 is a 70-quart wheeled cooler built for moving a big load across rough ground. It has 10-inch never-flat wheels, a horizontal steel telescoping handle that locks, a raised body, THERMECOOL foam insulation, a lockable dry-storage compartment, a butler tray that clips to the handle and a suspended food basket. Trailmate is Igloo's premium line. It isn't rotomolded and isn't built to the same heavy-duty standard as the hard coolers elsewhere on this site, and its warranty is one year. What it does better than any of them is roll.
What the Amazon link sells: "Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 Qt Roller Cooler, Carbonite", ASIN B0C6C572N2, Igloo part and model number 00034927. Igloo's own store lists 00034927 as the Carbonite colourway of the Trailmate Journey 70. At our check the listing showed a future availability date rather than immediate stock, so check the ship date on Amazon before you order. Other colours are separate listings.
The other wheeled cooler we cover is the YETI Roadie 48, a tall, compact roller with 76 cans of capacity. The Trailmate Journey 70 is a different shape and a different job: a long, deep chest that holds 112 cans by Igloo's count, with a tray and storage built around it for a campsite or beach day. It's a car-camping cooler first. For most van interiors, it's large, and we'll be specific about that below.
This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. Specs come from Igloo's product page and the Amazon listing we link to. Where the two disagree, we say so. See how we research.
Choose this if:
- You move the cooler from vehicle to campsite, beach or picnic area, often over sand, gravel or grass.
- You camp as a family or group and need a large cooler with built-in serving and storage features.
- Your vehicle has a large cargo area, a truck bed or a rear garage, and the cooler mostly lives outside at camp.
Skip this if:
- You want a cooler that lives inside a van. At about 34 inches long and nearly 24 inches tall with the wheels, it's bulky indoors.
- You want long ice life or heavy-duty construction. Look at the Pelican Elite 70QT or Dometic Patrol 55.
- You want a long warranty. Igloo covers Trailmate coolers for one year.

Igloo's product page lists THERMECOOL foam insulation in the body and lid, Cool Riser Technology (the body sits up off the ground to keep it away from hot surfaces), a lockable water-resistant storage compartment with an anti-leak gasket, a removable butler tray that sits on the telescoping handle and stows under the lid, a suspended interior basket for food that should stay dry, a threaded drain plug that takes a garden hose, four self-draining cup holders in the lid, two stainless steel bottle openers and tie-down hooks on the body for towels or chairs.
Notes on the numbers. The Amazon listing for the Carbonite version gives 34.59 x 19.7 x 23.61 inches, slightly different from Igloo's page. Plan on about 34.6 by 20.3 inches of floor, the larger of each. Igloo's interior height is given as 15 inches, but its own metric conversion beside it reads 28.1 cm, which is about 11 inches. Multiplied out, 23 x 13.5 x 15 inches would be over 80 quarts, more than the 70 quarts Igloo claims. Treat the interior height as uncertain, somewhere between 11 and 15 inches, and plan by the 70-quart figure.
Ice retention: what Igloo says
Igloo's product page describes "extended ice retention" from THERMECOOL insulation and Cool Riser Technology, and Igloo's store files the Journey 70 in its 4-day ice-retention category. Igloo doesn't state the test conditions, such as ambient temperature, ice quantity or lid openings. Treat four days as a best case.
That puts it a step below the thick-walled hard coolers we cover. RTIC claims up to 7 days for its 52 QT Ultra-Light under stated cooling tips, and Engel claims up to 10 for the ENG35 without conditions. For a weekend at a campground with an ice machine, four days is plenty. For a week between ice stops, it isn't.
To get the most out of it:
- Pre-chill the cooler with a bag of ice the night before you load.
- Freeze water jugs and put them at the bottom. They last longer than cubes and become drinking water.
- Keep it in shade. The raised body helps on hot sand or pavement, but direct sun on the lid still costs ice.
- Use the lid cup holders and tray so people aren't opening the main box for every drink.
How it fits a van or car camping kitchen
Inside a van. Plan on about 34.6 by 20.3 inches of floor and 23.6 inches of height, plus the telescoping handle when extended. That's longer than the 60-liter ICECO VL60 12V fridge (31.2 by 19.5 by 18.9 inches) and about five inches taller. In a compact van with a fixed galley, it rarely fits well. In a high-roof van with a rear garage, it can ride behind the rear doors and roll straight out.
Rolling it. This is the reason to buy it. A loaded 70-quart cooler is heavy: our estimate is 90 to 110 pounds with a 2:1 ice load and a few days of food, starting from the 34.7-pound empty weight. Igloo says the horizontal dual-trigger Glide handle makes pulling a load "50% easier", and Igloo pitches the 10-inch wheels at sand and other rough ground. The YETI Roadie 48 also rolls, on solid NeverFlat wheels, but it's a smaller, taller box built to stand upright in a vehicle. If your campsite is a walk from the parking spot, or you're heading to a beach, that's a real difference.
Lifting it. Wheels don't help with the lift into a van or truck bed. At that loaded weight, it's a two-person lift. A ramp or a low cargo floor helps.
Securing it. Strap it down by the body, not the handle. Wheeled coolers want to roll under braking, so chock the wheels or strap across them as well as over the lid. Our rattle-proofing guide covers securing heavy gear.
At camp. The butler tray, cup holders, dry compartment and food basket turn it into a small serving station. For a group car-camping weekend, that's handy. Our weekend car camping kit guide covers what else to pack around it.
Food safety
A cooler keeps food safe only while it stays cold. Iowa State University Extension's camping food safety guidance says raw meat, dairy, eggs, leafy greens and cut melon must stay at 40°F or below, that perishables shouldn't be out of refrigeration for more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F), and that raw meat should go in its own cooler or on the bottom.
With a big, family-size cooler, it's tempting to load everything together. Put raw meat in sealed containers at the bottom, use the suspended basket for ready-to-eat food, and keep a thermometer inside. The AcuRite fridge and freezer thermometer has a wireless display. For keeping the cooler cold in hot weather, see our summer van kitchen guide.
Dry ice
Igloo's product page doesn't say whether the Trailmate Journey is rated for dry ice. Check with Igloo before using it. In any vehicle, dry ice gives off carbon dioxide gas as it warms. Don't carry it in a closed van or car or sleep in a vehicle with it, and ventilate while driving.
Limitations
- Big for a van interior. It's a car-camping and campsite cooler first.
- Shorter ice life than the thick-walled hard coolers we cover, by Igloo's own category.
- One-year warranty, the shortest of any cooler on this site.
- Uncertain interior height. Igloo's inch and centimetre figures don't match.
- Availability. At our check the Carbonite listing showed a future ship date.
- No bear certification listed.
How it compares
- YETI Roadie 48: smaller and taller, with 76 cans of capacity, a 5-year warranty and a periscope handle. Easier to fit in a van; carries less.
- Pelican Elite 70QT: the same size class without wheels, with heavier construction, a lifetime guarantee, and a higher price. Better for long trips; harder to move.
- RTIC 52 QT Ultra-Light: less capacity and no wheels, but light enough at 21 pounds empty to carry, with a stated 7-day ice claim.
- Dometic Patrol 55: a lower, rotomolded 54-liter box that fits under more van furniture.
Value
The Trailmate Journey 70 sits in the mid-range for large wheeled coolers. It costs considerably less than rotomolded coolers of similar capacity. What you get for the money is mobility, size and campsite features rather than maximum ice life or heavy-duty build. For group car camping, that's a fair trade. For a van cooler that rides inside every day, a smaller box serves better. Check current pricing on Amazon, since it changes often.
Final verdict
The Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 is the cooler to buy if moving a big load is the problem you're solving. Its 10-inch wheels, locking telescoping handle and serving features make it well suited to campsites and beaches. It's too big for most van interiors, Igloo's own ice figure is modest, and the warranty is short. Buy it for a family or group car-camping setup, and pick a smaller, tougher hard cooler or a 12V fridge for a van that lives on the road.
