ESPRO P0 Ultralight Travel Press Review: Brew in the Mug You Drink From

The ESPRO P0 Ultralight is a vacuum-insulated travel mug with a French press built into it. You add coffee grounds and hot water, steep, push the plunger down, and drink from the same vessel. ESPRO's dual micro-filter is designed to keep grit out of the cup, and ESPRO says its AirLock design stops extraction once you've plunged, so the coffee doesn't keep getting stronger as it sits. ESPRO lists a 16 oz capacity, a weight of 9.6 oz and dimensions of 2.9 x 2.9 x 9.2 in. The Amazon listing says it brews up to 12 oz with the filter in place.

What the Amazon link sells: the listing titled "ESPRO Go P0 Insulated French Press Coffee Maker for Travel, 16oz, Black" (ASIN B011WTW37A, model P0, part number 02830176). That's the 16 oz P0 Ultralight in black. Amazon lists other colours as separate ASINs; the press is the same. It's not ESPRO's larger P1, P3, P5 or P7 home presses, which are glass or stainless jugs rather than travel mugs. When we checked, Amazon showed it in stock.

This review is research-based. VanLifeKitchens doesn't test products hands-on. The specs come from ESPRO's P0 Ultralight product page and the Amazon listing; anything about everyday use is labelled as owner reports or our reasoning.

Choose this if:

  • You want one vessel to brew, carry and drink from, so there's one less thing to wash.
  • You drink one coffee at a time and often take it on a walk or a drive.
  • You want French press body with less sediment, and the option to add a paper filter.

What it is

Travel presses solve a specific van problem. A normal French press is a jug: you brew in it, pour into a mug, and wash both. If you leave coffee sitting on the grounds, it over-extracts and turns bitter. A travel press combines the brewer and the mug, and adds a way to stop extraction.

ESPRO's P0 does that with three parts:

  • A double-wall, vacuum-insulated stainless body. ESPRO describes "Advanced Insulation" without giving hours on its page. The Amazon listing says hot for up to 6 hours and cold for up to 10. Those are the maker's claims, not independent measurements, and real results depend on the starting temperature, the air temperature and how often you open the lid.
  • A dual micro-filter on the plunger. ESPRO says this gives grit-free coffee. Its page also calls the P0 paper-filter compatible; ESPRO's paper filters are sold separately, and they remove more oils and fine particles for a cleaner, pour-over-like cup.
  • AirLock. ESPRO says this stops extraction immediately after you plunge, so the first sip and the last taste the same.

The lid is leak-proof with a double lock, according to ESPRO, and a looped handle lets you carry it or clip it to a bag.

The difference between 16 oz capacity and 12 oz brew volume is the space the filter and plunger take up. Plan on 12 oz of coffee.

How it fits a van kitchen

Fewer dishes. In a van with a small sink, or none, every vessel you don't wash saves water. The P0 replaces a brewer and a mug with one item. Our van kitchen dishwashing system explains why that matters when you're carrying all your water.

Hot water, then nothing. Like any press, it needs water just off the boil from a kettle. On induction, a stovetop kettle such as the Hario Buono avoids an inverter-sized load; an electric kettle like the Bonavita needs a 1200 W AC supply. Heating 350 ml, enough for one P0, from about 15°C to boiling takes roughly 35 Wh of heat before stove losses, our estimate from water's heat capacity. Once brewed, the insulation keeps it warm without any more energy.

A driving coffee. Brew before you pull out, plunge, lock the lid, and the drink stays hot in a cupholder. The P0's 2.9 in diameter is the kind of size most car cupholders take, but check yours; cupholders vary.

Ground size. French press grind is coarse. The 1Zpresso Q Air holds 15 to 20 g, which is about right for one 12 oz press. If you add a paper filter, ESPRO's guidance on its page is to bloom and swirl after 3 minutes or stir after 90 seconds; follow the instructions in the box for the full method.

Storage. At 9.2 in tall, it stands in a drinks cubby or lies in a drawer. The plunger stays inside, so there are no loose parts to rattle.

Living with it

Cleaning. Tip the grounds into the bin or compost, rinse the filter and body, and let it dry with the lid off. ESPRO's product page doesn't state dishwasher safety, so hand-washing is the safe default. Dry it fully before storing; a closed, damp insulated mug in a warm van develops smells. If odour builds up, a soak with a little baking soda solution is a common fix for stainless bottles.

Timing. A press keeps extracting until you plunge. The P0's AirLock stops extraction afterwards, according to ESPRO, but the steep itself still needs a timer. Three to four minutes is the range the Amazon listing gives.

Tea. ESPRO sells a separate tea micro-filter for the P0, per its page. Without it, use the coffee filter only for loose tea you don't mind slightly fine.

Cold drinks. The Amazon listing says it keeps cold drinks cold for up to 10 hours, and its instructions mention pouring hot or cold water. ESPRO's page doesn't publish a cold-brew recipe for the P0, so treat cold use as a drinks-mug feature rather than a cold-brew system.

Limitations

  • One serving. 12 oz per brew. Two people need two presses, or two rounds.
  • Insulation figures are claims. ESPRO's page gives no hours; the 6 and 10 hour figures come from the Amazon listing.
  • Paper filters cost extra and are another consumable to carry.
  • No dishwasher statement on ESPRO's page.
  • You drink from the brewer. If you prefer a cup at the table, it's an awkward mug: tall and narrow.

How it compares

The Stanley Classic Vacuum French Press is the site's full-size insulated press; it makes coffee for two or more and keeps it warm, but you still pour into mugs. The AeroPress Original makes a cleaner cup with paper filters and brews straight into any mug, but it isn't insulated and you still need a mug. The P0 sits between them: one person, one vessel, warm for hours.

For the full set of brewers and how they fit different vans, see the van coffee complete guide. For more insulated drinkware, the Hydro Flask 32 oz and Klean Kanteen TKWide cover water.

Verdict

The ESPRO P0 Ultralight is a sensible single-person brewer for a van: a 16 oz insulated mug that brews 12 oz of French press coffee, weighs 9.6 oz, accepts paper filters, and, according to ESPRO, stops extraction when you plunge. It cuts a brewer and a mug down to one item to wash, which matters when water is limited. It's a one-serving device, its heat-retention numbers come from the listing rather than ESPRO's page, and paper filters are extra. If you drink one coffee at a time and often on the move, it fits well. If you brew for two, buy the Stanley press.
